I'm thinking about taking a trip to Thailand by myself. Do you think it's a wise decision? I know there's a ton of stuff to see there, but will it be worth it to go alone? |

If you're male and in a touristy area (eg Bangkok), be prepared to get lots of hassle from people trying to be your friend/sell you stuff/take you somewhere/go somewhere with you.

No stay home, it's a really unwise decision to make.
People can't travel alone in Thailand. It's against the law. If you are seen traveling alone you will be arrested on the spot and beaten up in a jail cell.
How exactly did you get out to Korea? Did you come as a package tour of ESL teachers and get left behind?

Do you mean as in safety or just to have a friend there with you for the journey? |

I just worry about getting bored being there by myself, not to mention never having been there before, being at a loss to figure out what to do. I'm not worried about safety. |

You're in Korea now, right? It'll be much easier in Thailand for you to find things to do, find people to talk with, and will probably be much more fun, as you said you've never been there before.
Just be careful. |

Ya sure, go alone. Go to someplace really romantic alone and then feel lonely and sob "boo-hoo I'm soo lonely I could cry". |

Only you know if you'll be bored or lonely being alone.
I almost ALWAYS travel internationally alone. Three times I have met a friend in a foreign country. Once it totally blew up (over a TWO DAY trip!) and we're not friends any more. The other two times it was awesome.
Oddly, almost every one of my trips I left a boyfriend at home. Only one of those boyfriends did I ever miss and was I happy to see again...hmmm... |

I admit, I am new to international travel. Thailand is going to be my first trip outside of the US and Korea. |

Oh shit, well enjoy.
The only thing that would bother me about traveling to Thailand alone is that everyone would think I'm a sex tourist if in a popular spot (Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket, etc.). Can you tell a ladyboy from a regular girl? Have fun beating them off. |

I understand that many do travel alone, particularly single dudes going on their adventure through life.
I traveled many countries alone, because it was only my dream and no one else's who I personally know. I never traveled with someone else as no one else will do what you do. If you are not married, then you are probably going it alone, but the advantage is you get to do more by being alone.
I am going to Thailand in several months alone, but expect many hassles from touts or scummy people just up to no good. Wherever you are, don't waste too much time with them or allow them to converse with you for very long, just blow em' off and walk on. Don't go in seedy red light district kind of places late at night by yourself as you could get robbed or worse.
That's my advice. Enjoy your own adventure. |

You lot visit a very different Thailand to the one I know. Outside of the tourist areas I have never had any touts chasing after me or any problems. In fact inside the tourist areas when I have ventured there I have only ever had a few.
If you really want to experience Thailand get on the local buses and get yourself up Issarn and see life around there. Head up to Loei and along the Maekhong to Nong Khai then onwards to Nakhon Phanom and down the east of the country. stop in Ubon Ratchatahani and cross over into Laos for a couple of days before taking a slow train back along towards BKK, get off at a few cities and spend a day or so seeing what life is really like.
The beaches and such like are nice but it's only the superficial world of tourism that you get to see.
There is nothing better than a bus ride at sunrise over the rice paddies watching the buffaloes wandering around. |

I think Thailand has to be the best place to go by yourself. Very easy to make chums either with fellow farangs or start chatting to Thais.
I say go for it you might be lucky enough to pick up a long-haired dictionary. |
