My, my, oh my: Nancy Pelosi and her liberal Democratic colleagues are at it again on Capitol Hill.

Now they've passed a resolution condeming the Turkish genocide against the Armenians...during the First World War.

This most recent effort to confront human rights abuses retroactively would be both laughable and pathetic if it weren't so damaging to American foreign policy.

Thanks Nancy--and while I'm at it--thank you, too, Jimmy, for leading the Democratic Party charge in a near desperate effort to demonstrate to voters that liberals can muster clout against Republicans even if it means undermining our military efforts in the Middle East.

What is also galling is that the current incarnation of the Democratic leadership is the first to openly and deliberately interfere in the foreign policy initiatives of the U.S. government. I'm not only referring to the Bush Administration--which has bungled in its own regard by not allowing the Turks to take care of Kurdish incursions on their southern border--but also the Pentagon and State Department.

Carter is the first ex-president to publicly and vociferously criticize the foreign policy of a current president in nearly a century. That he would have the audacity to judge given his own hapless years at the helm of state (e.g., Panama Canal, return of Khomeini to Iran, the Iranian hostage crisis, continued support for Marcos, etc.) is a sight to behold.

The liberals of this day and age in Congress never saw a resolution they didn't like. To listen to Pelosi and company you'd think they were deliberating some timely moral crisis in the world.

Never mind, of course, that this resolution comes at a time when we rely on Turkish bases for nearly 70% of all logistical support to the troops in Iraq, or that these forward bases are used for refueling purposes by the Air Force for wider Middle East operations.

Never mind that these same Democratics who lament the supposed insensitivity of the Bush Administration to world opinion are tearing open an old wound, one which has already drawn a very negative response from the Turkish government and the public at large.

Never mind that their time could be better spent on figuring out how to put more diplomatic pressure on Russia, India, and China to leverage the military junta in Burma.

Never mind that the historical dock of damnation is full of genocidal acts just waiting to be denounced for posterity.

I mean, Nancy and Tom, why stop here? How about a resolution condemning the Khmer Rouge's actions in Cambodia? How about a resolution condemning the Japanese genocide against China?

I wouldn't be surprised if Nancy hosts a Democratic fundraiser with a film festival featuring Midnight Express as a way of stirring up anti-Turkish sentiment.

You go, girl. You go...away.

Sorry, but that horse left the barn some time ago.

The Nazi holocaust has been memorialized all over the place for decades, including at a government-funded museum in Washington DC. I don't know if there have been any official condemnations from Congress, but that's really beside the point, given the amount of state-sponsored attention that has been paid to the holocaust.

Now granted, it was more politically feasible to memorialize the Nazi atrocities, because postwar Germany was pretty much browbeaten in that regard, and certainly wasn't in a position to launch anything that would appear to be a defense of Hitler's record. Nevertheless, if a government is going to issue official condemnations of one country's atrocities, it becomes kind of difficult to say that they shouldn't do the same thing for others.

Personally, I'm at the point where I think all state-sponsored recognition of other countries' histroical wrongdoings should be done away with, including the holocaust. Countries should memorialize(and compensate) their own victims, not anyone else's.

So you're opposed to Steve's sentiments...

Not neccessarily either, because I don't know what Steve thinks about state-sponsored holocaust memorialization. My only point is that it doesn't really make sense to criticize one instance of memorialization, without criticizing the general justifying principle. Holocaust memorials being the most conspicuous example of that principle's application.

The Holocaust was a planned, industrial-scale genocide. It was truly unique. There's something especially horrible about it that warrants a museum.

Maybe. But if Germany had NOT been browbeaten by the allies post-WW2, and if German public opinion tended to regard the holocaust in the same way that Turkish public opinion regards the Armenian genocide, and if German support were critical to some American foreign policy undertaking, would you still be so forthright in defending state-sponsored memorialization of the holocaust?

It seems to be related, at least in part, to the threat of Turkish incursions into Iraqi Kurdistan, which the US opposes.

This is one of those things that makes the government seem like it's not really part of the country. There's two wars going on, people are losing their houses all over the country from the subprime mortgage problem, millions of people don't have healthcare, and the government is taking the time to condemn a genocide that happened during World War I. No one who's not either in government or part of an activist group would think, "It's about time we condemned the Turks for slaughtering the Armenians 90 years ago."

I would not defend it due to bad timing. Laughing

I'm sorry to those for whom this statement seems unprincipled. But its true; the Holocaust was not of interest to the US in 1940 but it was after the US defeated Germany. Point taken. But it just goes to show that there might be two reasons to distinguish the Holocaust situation from the Armenian genocide situation. It doesn't seem to me that Steve has to account for the Holocaust museum's existence should he find this Congressional Armenian genocide fiasco ridiculous.

Lastly, and I'm surprised Steve didn't touch on this, there are a lot of Jews AND Armenians in America. The latter group are conveniently concentrated in certain Californian representative districts.

Here's what Congress did last Wednesday. I reckon over half of it is outright frivolity (1-86). I also reckon that this frivolity has been going on for quite some time. Congratulations to Steve "the weasel" McGarett for finally learning a little something about US government. What are you going to tell us next? "CONGRESS WASTES A LOT OF MONEY"?

While I don't think the bill has done any good (note that Clinton got a similar bill removed in 2000 on grounds that it would damage relations with Turkey), the partisan line isn't nearly as clear as you suggest:

Quote:
Voting in support of the measure were Representatives Gary Ackerman (D-NY), Howard Berman (D-CA), Gus Bilirakis (R-FL), Steve Chabot (R-OH), Jim Costa (D-CA), Joseph Crowley (D-NY), William Delahunt (D-MA), Eliot Engel (D-NY), Eni F. H. Faleomavaega (D-SM*), Elton Gallegly (R-CA), Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ), Gene Green (D-TX), Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX), Ron Klein (D-FL), Tom Lantos (D-CA), Donald Manzullo (R-IL), Michael McCaul (R-TX), Donald Payne (D-NJ), Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA), Edward Royce (R-CA), Linda Sanchez (D-CA), Brad Sherman (D-CA), Albio Sires (D-NJ), Christopher Smith (R-NJ), Diane Watson (D-CA), Lynn Woolsey (D-CA), and David Wu (D-OR),
19 democrats, 8 republicans

Voting against the measure Gresham Barrett (R-SC), Roy Blunt (R-MO), John Boozman (R-AR), Dan Burton (R-IN), Russ Carnahan (D-MO), Jeff Flake (R-AZ), Jeff Fortenberry (R-NE), Luis Fortuno (R-PR), Ruben Hinojosa (D-TX), Bob Inglis (R-SC), Connie Mack (R-FL), Gregory Meeks (D-NY), Brad Miller (D-NC), Mike Pence (R-IN), Ted Poe (R-TX), Illeana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), David Scott (D-GA), Adam Smith (D-WA), Thomas Tancredo (R-CO), John Tanner (D-TN), and Robert Wexler (D-FL). Representatives Ron Paul (R-TX) and Joe Wilson (R-SC) did not vote.
8 democrats, 13 republicans (15 if you include abstentions)

That means that 70% of the democrats voted for the bill, and 38% of the republicans. There's definitely a difference, but it's hardly a matter of one party ganging up on the other. Or in other words, if all the republican members had decided to vote against H. Res. 106, it would have been defeated 19 to 29. So without the support from the Republican side it wouldn't have passed.

But that kind of thinking doesn't compute with the OP.

Why do this now?

It seems to be related, at least in part, to the threat of Turkish incursions into Iraqi Kurdistan, which the US opposes.

Bingo.

True. The response was mostly for the benefit of those for which it does compute.
