I have read that many of you enjoy using music videos to teach from. In what ways do you use videos to teach? I am new teacher, and I'm looking for all the resources I can get. I am also looking for a way to teach the "This is Halloween Song" to middle schoolers, but am worried it's too long - though very simple.

do u mean that song from "the nightmare before christmas"? i was actually watching that last night wondering if i should play it for my kids. do u think it's appropriate for 1st grade of MS? are u actually going to teach them the lyrics? u could always just have them watch the video and write down any of the vocab words they saw (after reviewing halloween vocab, tradition, monsters, etc.). kids with the most correct words win somesort of prize.

i've also found mr. bean to be good to show kids...i did that before summer break, and then i would ask questions about what they saw. yes, i'm aware that mr. bean uses almost no English, and that's why my kids understood it and paid attention Wink

yes, from the nightmare before Christmas. I am not sure what I am going to do yet with it.

But I also wanted to find out what the other teachers do when they show music videos.

I think that videos have a "place" in teaching but they aren't everything and shouldn't be abused......

Primarily they can introduce a topic or be used for down time or specifically for motivating our "pictographic" youth/young (and ourselves too - so much we are now not text driven but image driven).

As far as teaching language, very few music videos really allow the viewer/student to focus on the language nor do they facilitate understanding of the context/meaning as do most dramas/shorts. So I prefer to use just the music and text -- this can be just listening for certain details/items or gist. Or it can be done through karaoke which also imparts reading skills and kills a few birds with the musical rock....

Videos I've had success with are slower and very context specific. Lucky - Britney Spears works well. I also like Mr. Morton by School House Rock -- excellent example of a video that really works! I also produced an "IF I had a million dollars" video that only uses pictures to facilitate comprehension. Another fav. is of course Fool's Garden's Lemon Tree. The animated version really helps students understand the context/meaning and is excellent.

If you go to my community, scroll down and you can preview hundreds of karaoke videos (videos with subtitles). When you like one, just hit full screen and you got it there for everyone. If you want to download and play in a stand alone or when traveling and have no internet, you'll have to join the community and get the password.

Cheers,

DD
