I am looking into teaching in SK and have an MIP (minor in possession of alcohol) from when I was 18, I am 27 now. This does Not prevent me from getting my teacher certification in the states. Actually my advisor said it is quite common. What I want to know is if criminal record checks are common with Korean employers and will they not hire me on account of an MIP from almost ten years ago?

Aren't all criminal record of minors sealed once they reach 21?

You'll be fine, in fact you'll be in good company maybe even worse if you've read the PJ threads sprouting up around here. Anyway when you get here your employer will practically be forcing it down you anyway, soju away.

In the UK there are two types of Police check: full and basic disclosures. A full disclosure will list all offences regardless of when they were committed. So, any offences commited as a youngster will also be listed.

Alternatively, you can apply for a basic disclosure, which will only list those offences which are classed as 'unspent'. Depending on the seriousness of the offence, crimes are graded accordingly and will remain on your record for varying lengths of time after which they are then considered 'spent' and are struck from your record. Certain crimes however, will always remain unspent although these are the very serious offences such as rape and murder etc.

Background checks aren't common and an MIP won't keep you from employment. Think of it as if you were being hired back home. Who would care about an MIP?

Much was made of PJs points about skirting around the issue of a criminal record statement.

My first public school,I tried to get one issued from overseas.I faxed the relevant documents to my home country, phoned repeatedly, yet it was never sent.My home country just couldn't be arsed working with me to organise it-I wasn't in the country-and my school never mentioned it to me again. It was something that the recruiter was pushing for.I had a couple of references from lawyers, but they were never followed up on as true and accurate, let alone if their identities were the same.

Second public school,I merely got one from the Korean police(I hadn't been back in my home country for 6 years through pure indifference)and that was good enough for them.

A mate of mine was recently busted for importing hash from Hong Kong to my country(can't even begin to fathom why)and my home country police said don't worry,we don't share police info. with China. He's too shit scared to return so it's a moot point.

Anyhoo,if police or criminal checks are to become the norm, the process has to be standardised, and not merely a responsibility put on the teacher. The schools, education departments and Immi have to take a vested interest in this as well, and make it unambiguous.

Thanks for the feedback, I have the opportunity to get the MIP expunged from my record but that means waiting around here until mid-January. The only worry is that I was 18 when I got it so it won't be off my record... grumble grumble...

Another thought just popped in my head, would an MIP or criminal record of one matter if I would prefer teaching at public schools and/or unis? Thanks for all the help again.
