Feeling kind of shitty over current events (*ahem*) on the board? Want to do something about it?

I challenge every poster on the board to make a donation to a children's charity. Doesn't matter what charity; doesn't matter how much. If you want to post your donation, feel free. If you don't, that's fine too.

I ask users to minimize the off topic chatter and maximize the focus on charity.

I am also interested in information on two things:
1) A charity that deals specifically with prevention or treatment of child sexual abuse in Asia that accepts donations via the internet.
2) A charity in Korea that deals with sexual abuse of any kind and is accepting donations. Those with Korean language skills need apply.

Give it up.

Save the Children. $USD 100.

Save the Children has a 4 star rating from Charity Navigator.

Good idea.

My donation was sent to EPCAT, a Bangkok-based international organization that fights child pornography and prostitution.

Nope. I already earmark my own charities every year.

I'm all for the idea.
However, I don't know of a good organization dealing in this. The 2 previous orgs mentioned don't work for me.
I've worked for and with several nonprofit orgs and have come to be skeptical without having first or second hand knowledge.
I recall some poster mentioning working in this field in Thailand...
can anybody offer an option?

thanks,

good idea paji

UNICEF, obviously.

Or, how about Covenant House? They help homeless kids in North and South America.

Fair enough. I chose my charity based on the Charity Navigator report. They don't deal specifically with child sexual abuse, but mostly do work with poverty and health. I figure, if the organization gives kids and families opportunities, they will keep out of harms way. I think any good kids charity will do. It doesn't have to specifically deal with sexual abuse.

Give it up.

Maybe this is a good time to announce the Toys for Tots charity. There's a ton of great Korean and foreign bands lined up. More details to come.

That's my birthday! All my friends could bring presents for kids instead of me!

And to stay on topic, I second Save the Children. While looking for Korean charities online I came across this site: http://www.britishseoul.com/charities.html
Has anyone heard of any of the charities listed? Specifically the Sister Theresa Seoul group.

Almost 500 page views and 2 donations (one of which was by me).

Let it not be said that Dave's posters aren't a generous bunch.

I think the best thing to do is just set-up a standing order from your bank account to the charity. I do a monthly payment to UNICEF. Not much, but it's every month.

I give to my own choice of charities every year.

This includes the salvation army, unicef, and the British red cross (have a standing order with the bank back home).

If you want to give to a charity...do so. Don't do it cause you feel bad cause of some pedo a$$hole. You give to charity to help the needy, not for your own agenda.

This is fuked up. Did the Koreans give more $$ to charities cause some whackjob kills a bunch of people in Virginia? I bet they didn't. It wasn't an issue.

Him being a Canadian isn't an issue. White/black/yellow...not an issue. If you need to make yourself feel better. Give some money to a kids charity, but what you're doing is not charity. It's buying a guilt free life.

I give to charities, but not because of this thread.

I prefer Amnesty International, medical research institutes (cancer and kid diseases) and social organizations (commoncause.org, ACLU, individual candidates).

If you're giving money to charity, who cares what your reason is?
