106 Foreigners Teaching Without Bachelor's Degree
2007-10-16 17:57:32

A lawmaker says more than 100 foreign teachers at the nation's elementary, middle and high schools do not have four-year college degrees.

Releasing his analysis of data presented by the Education Ministry, Representative Min Byung-du said Tuesday that 106 foreigners without bachelor's degrees are teaching in public schools.

Min, who sits on the parliamentary education committee, said the unqualified instructors had disguised their high school diplomas as bachelors degrees or used diplomas from unaccredited colleges.

Min urged the government to improve its system to check foreigners' academic backgrounds and to take action against illegal teachers.

you know, this reminds me of the original Manchurian Candidate... when Sen. Iselin is trying to get press and he announces random numbers of card-carrying communists in government.

i think he finally decided on 57.

Four year degrees aren't needed. I'm here on a 3 year Uni degree, and it's all perfectly legitimate.

How clever a disguise do you need to change a high school diploma to a college diploma? What did they do, white out the word High School?

Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me. So, what about fool me 106 times?

Yeah, I saw that bit, just thought I'd comment because some people do think you need a 4 year degree to work here, but it's not actually the case.

But other than that, have nothing further to contribute Smile

He forgot to mention that they all have F4 visas and were not required to present their notarized degrees and sealed transcripts to immigration to get their visas.

They simply had to present a copy of their degree to the school administrator to get their job. Hmmm... sounds like a university prof (Korean) who only had to have a "friend" make a call instead of even presenting a degree.

I hate the bashing we have to put up with everytime THEY have an election.

The only requirement for an F4 is that you are a Korean descendant. Since it is not a work visa, you don't have to present degrees/transcripts. It just so happens that the F4 allows you to work in Korea.

Its the fault of the schools that fail to get proper paperwork. GEPIK wanted everything from me. I'm surprised they didn't get a stool sample along with everything else.

Grandstanding to try to help Koreans save face in the wake of the Koreans who have had illegal degrees.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if:

1. Many of these were people still waiting on degrees to be checked.

2. Were F4 visa holders, as mentioned.

3. Refused because they already had their degree checked recently.

Mr. Min Byung-du should release the list of names. Put up or shut up. Otherwise, we have to assume that he's invented a number like Heinz ketchup inspired the Angela Lansbury character.

Uh, so if they're illegal, why are they still teaching? This doesn't make sense. They collected all this information? How?
