So I have a friend who left today, he was over at my place last night and told me he got half of his severance pay(1.1mil)today. He has been at my towns mid school for 18 months, he got his pension in full last year and got another 1.1mil for his 6 months in the second contract. Is that possible??or he is just a lucky ba......?? |

his contract was a year and he decided to quit after 6 months. The school told him you will get 1.1 mil as retirement grant!!!!!!!and he did get it....now I guess they mean severance pay by re-grant......I am in shock at this moment....I will be out in 2 months and hope to get that also..hehe... |

Your friends school was extremely generous.
I received a quarter severance once after only 5 mths at a poorly run hagwon that never had enough classes for me. My recruiter at the time negotiated that without my knowledge |

Acutally, I've read that you get severance starting after 12 months. If you quit your job after 12 months, you get pension for every month. It is through the pension office, not your school's good graces. |

As far as I know you get severance pay once you complete your 12 month contract. I do not understand what you mean by pension for every month....pension is a different thing and you will get pension for every month you work...what do you mean exactly??
In my friends case the school told him since he worked for 18 months he will get severance for 6 months in his second contract.....after finishing his first contract he got his severance and then signed a new 1 year contract which he ended after 6 months and got 1.1mil severance FROM THE SCHOOL...I just want to see if this has happend to anyone else??? |

It's the first I've heard of anyone getting severance for six months.
What confuses me is how he could get his pension after a year if he re-signed. I re-signed after my first year... and had to wait two years (until I switched jobs) to collect my pension. How did he get his pension without 'permanently' leaving Korea? |

Severance pay and pension are two different thing and cannot be used intrechangably. Look at your original post -

You are entitled to severance pay after 12 months of work. If you work for 18 months you are entitled to 1.5months severance pay. The fact that your friend was on a new contract shouldn't matter if it is with the same employer. Some hagwan bosses will lie and say they don't have to pay it because he only worked there for 6 months of his second contract; however the fact that he has worked there for 18 months in total means he was entitled to an extra .5months bonus.
As he signed a second contract the school didn't have to pay him sevarance pay after 12 months (since he was staying with them); they could legally have refused to pay until he left the school for good. However most schools will still allow you to take it. They don't have to pay it until you stop working for them though.
Your friend was entitled to the money, but a lot of people don't actually get it. So yes, he's lucky =) |
