I work at a public school and have been given the option of going home for lunch. I tried the cafeteria food and since I am new here, it will take some time to get used to so I said I'd go home.

Now I am being told that if I go home, I must stay an hour later because during lunch I am supposed to be available for students (and teachers) to practice their conversation skills. My GEPIK contract says I work eight hours a day including lunch.

It seems to me that lunch is my private time and time to recharge. Furthermore, if it is essentially teaching conversation, then I ought to be paid for an hour of OT. At this point, I am just disregarding what they said, continuing to go home for lunch, and having my day run for eight hours straight.

Does anyone else have to work an extra hour if they go home for lunch?

Tell them they can choose:

A) lunch is your time AND no extra hour later OR

Korea labor standards act:
Article 53 (Recess Hours)
(1) An employer shall allow a recess period of more than
30 minutes for every 4 working hours and more than 1 hour
for every 8 working hours during the working hours.

(2) A recess period may be freely used by workers.

B) find a new teacher.

You should win.

As a side note - they are correct, you are contracted for 8 hours of WORK per day including the lunch hour and not an 8 hour work day BUT they cannot easily replace you so... Remember - he who blinks first looses.

Ask them to have a sign-up list for who wants English conversation five days a week at lunch. Tell them it'll be an overtime teaching hour, and that it has to be done while eating. If attendance is dodgy, tell them you're going home from then on.

Just bring your lunch and stay on campus. Korean teachers aren't allowed to leave during lunch to go eat somewhere else, which is why they are hesitating on letting you do it. I've been bringin my lunch for more than a year now. They think it's wierd b/c we can't create prescious jeong together, but they got over it pretty quickly.

My school told me that I could also go home for lunch to eat. They don't make me do anything extra for going home for lunch. But then I'm only gone for about 30 minutes.

30 minutes simply isn't enough time. Just bring a lunch. You can get plenty of nice cold cuts for sandwiches and cheese at Lotte department store

Both me, & my Korean co-teachers, were permitted to go elsewhere, on the proviso that we let someone know where we were going (eg head teacher or Vice Principal), & when we'd be back. I was always back on time. During winter & summer camps, the cafetaria was closed. It was essential, to leave the school grounds, otherwise I'd have starved. Agreed, the food is often not great, but at other times it was quite good. Luck of the draw.
