|
|
My director went with me to immigration today. We did NOT need a letter of release such as everyone has mentioned. There is a form you can get at Immigration (if your director goes with you). It can be arranged to basically change your visa to a tourist visa so you have 30 days to exit the country, not 14. That's what we did, so now I don't have to be gone in two weeks as I thought I would. I just wanted to share this information with people who may be getting letters of releases and who don't have a new job yet. |

Yes but in some situations surely a LOR would be easier to obtain than dragging your director out to the airport with you.
That is assuming that as you say YOUR DIRECTOR MUST BE PRESENT. |

Yes, it's true - not always easy to have director with you - However, I hadn't heard about this from anyone I talked with about this situation (and I talked and wrote to a lot of people on this forum and otherwise!). So, I just wanted to let people know this can be an option. |

I have to say that I never found this info on Dave's. And I did many searches for LOR, etc. But of course, that's not to say it isn't here! I just hadn't heard of it before, so I was delighted to find out that I have 30 (instead of 14) days to leave the country! |

Seems like good news indeed. I wonder if the actual director has to be present or if they can send someone to by there for them 'by proxy'? |

No, the actual director has to be there. At least that's my understanding. |

The letter of release is not a legal requirement, just something that immigration decided upon. Your boss was there in person to release you from the contract and visa. When you go to apply for another E-2 visa, however, immigration might decide that they need to see the LOR from your last job, just to be sure.
There's alot of money tied up in an english school. The owners can't have the teachers just walking away and going to work across the street whenever the teacher wants... |

Okay. Thanks for this info. I'll ask him to bring the LOR to our meeting on SUnday when I have to be out of my apartment. |

The LOR is a myth. Treat it as such. All you need is proof you are no longer working for your ex-employer. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to find out such information.
Immigration, however, is god. |

short of a LOR, what would prove you no longer work for your ex-employer? |
