I'm totally without knowledge about computers, but I'd like to start getting into downloading now that I'm in Korea. Currently, I have a 4 year-old Dell Inspiron 5150 (I think) laptop. With all the music, photos, and writing I have on it at this point, it currently has around 7GB left of space on the C drive.
First, I realize that this is not a lot of space. My computer runs very slow--like glacial compared to a newer computer. Is this related to the lack of memory?
I got a free installation of symantec anti-virus back in school and have kept it running all this time, but I'm wondering if it's not actually working. It seems to update virus definitions, but it's an old 2005 version of the program. It scans every day, but has never found anything...which makes me wonder if it's even working. I ran ad-aware last night and did a disk defrag. Still slower than slow. This problem has been ongoing for quite awhile, but I'm just now getting irritated enough to do something about it. Procrastination.
Secondly, if this is simply how much I have left, will I be able to accomodate torrents? I don't plan on stock-piling, but I'd like to be able to download a movie or several television shows. Not to mention music. I'm thinking if my computer is not riddled with several years (!!!) worth of spyware and viruses then it might be at the point where I need to invest in a storage hard drive just to get me to the point of the next machine I buy. Is that the case?
Any advice would be appreciated. I apologize if this is a dumbass post, but I've got really no clue and though I'm capable of searching online for answers, having some that are tailored to my particular situation would be great.
Thanks! |

You have 7 gigs of space on your hard drive and the average DVD-rip is 4.7 gigs... do the math....
You will need to get an external HDD to accomodate your downloads. If you plan to leave the HDD parked at home then get a 500gig HDD in an external case (more capacity and less cost than the laptop models) and it will have it's own power supply so it won't overheat your battery.
500gig HDDs run about 115k-130k at yongsan and the external case is 20k-30k won.
Other than that you should be fine. The 5150 is a P4-3GHz machine - about the same as an entry level desktop computer now-a-days. More than capable of running torrents and playing movies. |

| Thanks for the advice. I had a feeling I'd need to get an external HDD at some point anyway. Now, it appears, is the time. |

| If your runs very slow now, then I would recommend formatting your hard drive or getting a new computer. Even if you get a 50000GB external HD, your processor will not transfer large media files very well between your computer and external HD especially if it's a USB connection. |

Sounds like your HDD has probably had it at this stage and needs to be replaced. Also if you intend to do a lot of downloading then a separate HDD is a must in my opinion as I have from personal experience that downloading a lot of movies really took it's toll my laptops HDD. |
