I want to buy some stocks, and wondering where users on this board do that. Do you use an online account? What, if any, are the tax implications as an expat?

A glutton for punishment, I see. I would have thought you got enough of being pilloried here at Dave's.

blase,

stay away from the KSM. buy Vanguard index funds via the internet. it'll beat the market average over time hands down.

no load funds. never pay a load. $500.00 bucks monthly for 20 years will catch you a nice nest egg. $1000.00 will be even sweeter

Blase,

I'll have to second that on staying away from Korean stocks. I bought two and have done terribly with both. One of them I have held on to because I believe it will eventually go back up (it's one of the bigger banks in Korea) the other one I sold at a 500,000 won loss. I have some of my funds in a money market account and another investment account through my wife that gets a pretty good interest rate.

Milwaukie, I appreciate the advice.

I'm not thinking of the Korean market, although I wouldn't be averse to it, as I'm thinking long term, not in cashing out.

I'd actually like to buy some B class shares in Berkshire Hathaway, if possible. I like the idea of an indexed fund, as well. Just thinking looong term, and would like a 10%+ rate of return, over the long haul.

Right now just in the idea stage, but want to know what my options are, so would like to hear the experiences of investors on this board.

I bought a no-load mutual fund on 4/04 (Matthews Korea fund, ticker symbol MAKOX). I'm up 77% (I was up 80% until Gray Friday came along last week). The fund is closed to new shareholders, but it shows there's money to be made in Korean funds.
