Today I watched the movie 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding' with my wife. I have seen it before, but not since moving to Korea.

I was thinkign to myself 'wow, this Greek culture is so similar to Korean culture'. Before I said it, my wife said it. She said it at least 10 times.

Take way the fat part, the long wedding ceremony part, the acceptance of outsiders part and you may be right.

Well, a lot of families here don't really accept foreigners, but in the case of many posters on this site, it's certainly possible. Just, you have to work at it. Eventually you can win them over.

My MIL hated me the first time she saw me. Now she calls me her son.

Some Koreans also fancy themselves akin to Italians. (Being half-Italian) I always get to hear about how similar Italians and Koreans are.

I'm guessing most countries are like that. The only reason we don't put up with that sort of thing in the US and Canada much is because we have smaller extended families, going back only a couple generations usually.

All peasant cultures are basically the same. Many immigrants to the US, Canada, Australia, came from poor farming communities.
Hard life, strong survival instinct.
