Crew Wins Deadly Pirate Battle Off Somalia

Story Highlights
North Korean crew recaptures hijacked vessel

Navy says two pirates killed, five captured; three from crew injured.

Pirates aboard hijacked Golden Nori carrying highly flammable benzene

(CNN) -- The crew members of a North Korean freighter regained control of their ship from pirates who hijacked the vessel off Somalia, but not without a deadly fight, the U.S. Navy reported Tuesday.

The USS James E. Williams ordered pirates to give up their weapons, the Navy says.

When the battle aboard the Dai Hong Dan was over, two pirates were dead and five were captured, the Navy said.

Three wounded crew members from the cargo ship were being treated aboard the guided-missile destroyer USS James E. Williams.

The captured pirates were being held aboard the North Korean vessel, the Navy said.

The bandits had seized the ship's bridge, while the crew kept control of the steering gear and engines, the Navy said.

The Koreans moved against the attackers after the Williams -- responding to reports of the hijacking -- ordered the pirates to give up their weapons, according to the Navy.

When the crew members stormed the bridge, the deadly battle began. After the crew regained control, Navy sailors boarded the Dai Hong Dan to help with the injured.

North Korea and the United States have no diplomatic relations.

Regardless of what we might think about that maligant dwarf and the rest of his minions, North Korea is still a legitmate country and hense, any attack by pirates deserves aid from another countriess forces. Those captured could legally be hanged.

The United States is in a state of some sort of rapprochment with North Korea, and, even if that weren't the case, piracy has to be stopped and the U.S. Navy did the right thing by responding.

First: Is there any chance whatsoever of keeping the racist slurs out of threads?

Second: "Can be legally hanged" depends on the law of the jurisdiction in which the case is tried.

Third: How bad of a career move is it to get caught and tried in a North Korean court?

Fourth: Back in 1989, when my vessel, a US Navy carrier, was conducting operations off of Korea in October and a Sailor fell overboard, all ships in the area, including those of the North Korean Navy, assisted in the search. Sadly, he was never found.

"Update: North Korean Crew Fight Off Pirates, Regain Cargo Ship In Somalia
October 30, 2007 7:10 p.m. EST

Windsor Genova - AHN News Writer
Mogadishu, Somalia (AHN) - Twenty-two crew members of a North Korean cargo ship fought off and overpowered eight pirates who hijacked their vessel off the coast of Mogadishu, Somalia on Tuesday.

Agence France-Presse said armed men boarded and seized the MV Dia Honga Dan on Monday. The pirates, who are members of a local clan tasked to guard ships against pirates in Somali waters, demanded a $15,000 ransom.

Dahir Hassan, an elder in the Somali port of Haradere, said the crew reached for the pirates' guns and violently subdued them to regain control of their ship.

Andrew Mwangura, head of the Kenya chapter of the Seafarers' Assistance Program, confirmed that the freighter had been freed. The ship unloaded cargo in Mogadishu traders and was sailing home when it was hijacked."
