I haven't been here nearly as long as many on this board, but in my time here my skin has gotten a lot thicker and I tend to embrace conflict rather than avoid it. I'm still generally a nice guy but have no problem being a prick if I need to be.
Has anyone else noticed themselves becoming less cordial since their time in Korea? |

No, the opposite really.
I used to be quite the *beep*. But being a hard ass doesn't go over well with Koreans, esp. in the workplace. Polite but firm is the new call. |

EXACTLY.
Politeness and especially INDIRECT communication instead of direct confrontation is an artform I've learned to be better at. I'm less tactless than in the past.
Though I'm finding many fellow foreigners to be so pushy these days and a lot less considerate than the locals. |

I used to feel that way. I've softened up a bit. It wasn't only the Koreans that brought the bad side out in me though . |

Korea generally toughens newbies within a few short months. The danger is to get too cynical and negative though.. |

People say that being in Korea has made me paranoid.
I say it's just a higher state of awareness.
Who wants to know?
Why do you ask?
Who are you?
Why are you looking at me? |

I came from China so Korea is paradise and I feel like I've finally been able to let my guard down... this after spending a year getting my house robbed, my iPod stolen off my person while I was walking, my wallet lifted, and my credit card stolen from my pocket while sitting down. I read lots of horror stories about Korea on these boards before I came here 4 months ago... still waiting for something bad to happen. Update to follow... |

Thankfully, I'm already cynical and negative. If anything this should soften me up a little bit. |

I must say that here in the P.I the locals have more manners than the kpeople I teach. You would think that the Philippinos would be the ones with no manners, but quite contrary. The only thing is those outside karoke machines, they blast those things at night and rock the whole neighborhood, palm trees shaking and coconuts falling! |

I think I've gotten a bit soft in the middle and mushy in the head from being here.
What this thread needs is SPINOZA telling people that they're p&ssies for thinking Korea is tough and gritty. |

Or Steve McGarrett saying "I find it indubidubly inconsequential that tribal matadors are often the tribulus root of misconduct and flatulence. Shame on you and your progeny for such testicular meandering and dereliction thereof." |
