(from a student)
Assignment: Write a story about something you do in school, then write the main idea under your story.

"Last Thursday at school, something funny happened. My friend did a silly action, and I put my finger into his ass to make him go back to his chair.

But he was very hurt. He wanted to go to the nurse's office."

Your Main Idea: "I put my fingers in my friend's ass."

You never see them do it to each other?? The reason they do it to teachers is as a sign of affection (which means that if you've never been ddong-chimmed then your students don't like you). It's a bonding experience.

What out-of-their-mind Korean teacher told you that?? It's a ridiculous excuse given to foreign teachers to justify what is clearly inappropriate behavior.

I've had it done to me and it pisses me off. Take your affection and stick it someone else's bum!

It's a horrific unacceptable violation of personal space and a token of disprespect that is not taken seriously by Korean teachers. The double standard is that if a student ever tries it on a female Korean teacher, that student will get a justified earful of abuse, and probably whacked too. These are usually the only disciplinary treatments a precocious little boy can understand.

Of course as foreign teachers we can't exactly hit them or cuss them out, and obviously as the dignified and adult professional types we all are there's no way to just ddongchim them back.

Instead, when any of the little ankle bitters do it to me, I grab the arms of the offender so they can't get away. Then I yell "Ilwa ddongchim!" to call the other little cretins over to teach him a lesson while he tries to squirm away in terror. I know it sounds perverse, but I guarantee the particular napun hakseng in question will not try it again. And before I get flamed for this, I don't let the poor kid get really violated; it's more of a fear factor thing.

I think it's true that if a Korean student of any age tried this on a female Korean teacher, the response would not be an understanding, patient one. However, on a Korean male teacher it may be another story. I'm not sure about this, because I've only worked in Japan and not in Korea (which leads me to wonder: did Korea get the ddong-chim from Japan? Because those are the only two countries I know of that do it...), but in Japan I never saw ddong-chim tried on a female teacher (or on me). BUT my husband worked in a kindergarten and they tried it on him plenty. I once walked in a junior high school classroom to find my students, male and female, chasing their male teacher trying to ddong-chim him- he was trying to ddong-chim them back. I asked him point-blank: Why do you guys all do this? He and the students thought for a moment and said, "I guess it's just fun!" Shocked

Hmmm... You got this B.S., too, eh?!

Geez, a shot to the anus equals affection?!

A sharpened pencil up the backside is not an affectionate gesture at all: it's a sure sign of hostility.
