What would you say if I, or you, had a three story house, with five bedrooms, two huge family rooms, a kitchen, backyard, utility room and a front veranda, and it all cost about US $250.00 a month?
Well, I do, and I don't know what to do with all the room(s.)
I live in Taiwan though, in a place called Miao-Li, Hakka central(The Hakka are some of the earliest Chinese settlers to Taiwan.)
But what would you do with all this space? I've been so used to those offistel's, or one-rooms. I suppose I could rent out the rooms but like to live alone. It's really something having your own house here, so much so I don't know what to do.
But honestly, what would you do if you had a house here? |

Considering the way many foreigners treat their housing here and at the GEPIK orientations...I wouldn't. |

open a bed & breakfast
you totally control the schedule, doing it as often as you want, telling people you're "booked" when you dont want to |

Yeah or something like that.
I really would make it some kind of possibility to rent out for short stints.
Long Term rentals can really be a pain in the ass. You could even hire a cleaning lady to do all the cleaning, including your space.
If you really live all by yourself i would really consider that option. I have slept in many places like that in my travels in Europe, and it really gives an extra touch to the whole experience. |

If I knew how to cook I'd open up a bed and breakfast. The hostel option is kinda lacking, since there aren't many tourist attractions for staying here other than the fact Taichung is about an hour away. But I've heard Taichung beats Taipei.
Maybe I'll just rent it out or make it a kind of refuge for those in need. God knows I've bordered on homelessness before. But I have to save some bucks, get some more furniture.
Nonetheless, it's really astonishing having a house here. The only problem is, job security isn't as strong here as it is in Korea. If it was, I'd be making this house a possible permanent residence. |

Maybe you should try to appeal to the Taiwanese public by trying to make your house special in some way. Taiwanese love new and different things. You could turn the whole thing into a craft house, where you decorate your house in say Canadian/Australian/... style but the thing is everything is for sale. Get pictures, crafts, furniture from your home country and sell it for $$$$. Serve tea in fancy little tea cups and have a cafe that sells cake and coffee. Advertise it on the internet as a place to speak English and find interesting things to buy. |

It sounds like you just stumbled upon having a house. How did this happen? |

Three dogs, a really terrible ex-landlord, and 'guanxi', or knowing someone.
I actually just wanted a yard for the dogs, the last place I'd stayed in the landlord was fanatically clean and nutty, and I met a gal who knew someone down where I'm presently living.
And then there's something more, like the Divine. |
