The only thing I find surprising or at all objectionable about that is that hideous headline. |

A police spokesman sought understanding for the traffic violations, saying that police officers have many emergencies. |
Does this mean that the cops get speeding tickets when they are rushing to an emergency call? Or that they can't drive in bus lanes when on an urgent call? That would be crazy! |

I think they're referring to government vehicles, some of which are assigned to the Police Agency for transportation of officials. From that article, I didn't get the sense it's talking about patrol vehicles. |

I just like the caption under the picture :"A police officer stops a driver who was using a mobile phone while driving on a street near Chungmuro station in central Seoul." I wonder how long they had to drive around before they found a police officer actually doing work.. |

Is driving around with your blue and red lights flashing for no reason. a traffic violation.
Had to go to a police station some time ago, at the entrance I saw heaps of cops drive into the station (in personal cars, wearing street clothes) on their way to start a new shift, not one of them wore a seat belt! |

Downtown Seoul has been crawling with road cops lately. I got a ticket the other day driving through a red light with the other scooter guys. They've been out in droves. The funny thing is, they pull me for running a red light across a tiny 1-lane road that also had a red light waiting for pedestrians, when the next intersection up is a major junction that people constantly pull into and clog up creating massive gridlock all day long and they do not a damn thing.
Not saying they were wrong to ticket me, but the purpose of traffic citations should be to help traffic flow more safely and efficiently. It's like a cop busting a dude for smoking a joint while someone's being beaten up ten feet away. Hmm.. come to think of it, they'd probably make that call, too, given the option. |

I've seen cops drive on sidewalks and through crosswalks... no emergency, no obvious reason to rush. |
