Why is it that Korean students cheat like 10 year olds?

You'd think that after all the years of cheating experience they've had, they'd be good at it.

I had my Freshmen exams today...here's what I noticed.

1) My students think I'm dumb. When the best student walks in,everyone wants him/her to sit beside them.

2) My students think I'm really dumb. All year they sat in the same place with the same friends. Exam time comes and the hot dumb chicks are sitting next to the ugly smart guys. Me stoopid waegook, me no notice your seating change. I've only saw you over 20 times this term.

3) The 'No Talking and No Cheating' in red on the board means nothing.

4) If I catch you with your book on your lap...it's ok. Just use the cheat sheet in your pocket. Make sure you leave it in your desk where I can find it after you leave.

5) Finally I noticed that none of these brilliant students noticed that every 2nd exam had a big A in the top right corner. The other half had a B.

You'd think they'd notice the exams weren't the same when they copied off the smart person next to them. I had such a hard time not laughing my ass off. I'm sitting there reading a book and these kids think "wow...it's so easy to cheat".

What a bunch of dumba$$es. This wasn't just one class, this was all three of my freshmen classes.

Korea sparkling. God I love this country.

This happens for me as well. However, this also happened when I taught in Japan, Taiwan, and the US. Seems to be that no one notices the different tests and whatnot everywhere... x_x

I teach a uni. writing class and give them weekly assignments. I've warned them extensively against cheating by copying off the internet. First time they do it: 0. Second time: an "F" in the class.

And yet they still persist. Like I won't think to myself, "Hmmmm....can anyone in this class write 20 sentences without a single mistake?" And then I won't go do an advanced google search and find where they copied from? And then I won't shut them down. It's even worse when they've been getting like 5/10, 6/10 on all their assignment and then they all of a sudden turn in a work of perfection. Like I'm that stupid!

Two possible lines of attack:

1. If they're higher level, give them essay (or medium length answer) questions that can't be copied like objectives can. Harder to grade, but MUCH harder to cheat on.

2. If they're lower level - as most freshmen classes are - bring on the oral interview exam! Make sure you ask different questions to different students. Put up a timetable - give them appointments - and keep the waiting students in a nearby classroom, not outside the door where they may strain to hear.

I've also experimented with different versions of an objective test randomly dispersed throughout the classroom, but that's too much work for me vs. any benefit.

A guy at my univeristy wrote a paper and then he was called into the professor's office:

Prof: "That was a very good paper you wrote. I like it just as much as when I originally wrote it."

The guy copied it from a book which the professor wrote himself.

He gave him an A.

my students are preparing to go to uni in the US. i have one who persisitently copies sentences, sometimes even nearly a whole paragraph and slaps them into his essays.

i've told him multiple times that that crap is taken a lot more seriously in the states than in korea, but he doesn't let up on it...

They don't learn. If the go to the Us and get kicked out of school...they'll learn. Actually I doubt they'd even learn then.

some classes I give oral exams. Freshmen classes are not one of them. There's just too many students and I'll be honest. I'm lazy and I don't want to sit there for hours on end when I can give a test and mark it in an hour.

At about every school I have ever worked at, I have caught students cheating. Usually I easily caught them, and some (many, actually) denied it right as I caught them. That blows me away more than anything.

In the future, I will make test paper A, B, and C. If it seems too much work, just rearranging the order of the questions and changing one or two should be enough.

I caught one student cheating last year and she pled for mercy, saying that her cheat sheet hadn't helped her much.

I should let you off because you're not a very good cheater?

The other profs asked me to be lenient because she was a "sincere student."

Sincerity = Innocence?

A: Yes, I killed that man.
B: Oh, ok, you are sincere, 20,000 won fine.

If all the people who use a cheat sheet would just make the cheat sheet a day in advance and read over it, they will have most of the info memorized. When I was in school, I brought a cheat sheet a few times and then rarely used them. Making was a way of cram studying.

My favorite is when I sit the dummies next to each other and they cheat off each other. I think it's absolutely hilarious when they make the same ridiculous mistakes.

Now, I do teach at an elementary school but sometimes I swear my kids think I was born yesterday. KIDS: IF YOU'RE LOOKING DIRECTLY DOWN INTO YOUR LAP, I KNOW YOU'RE PLAYING WITH YOUR PHONE/READING A BOOK/PASSING NOTES.

*sigh*

It's a different educational philosophy-- the best student is the one who can parrot back the teacher's spiel the most accurately, not the one who can form logical conclusions and express their ideas in an effective and original manner.

I'm not saying it's acceptable. It just makes more sense in that context.

That makes me angrier than anything. Please, at least, give me the courtesy of assuming I have a shred of intelligence. Do me a favour and be a bit subtle.
