I am flying myself into Seoul at the end of December/early January. My big intention is to apply for jobs (teaching/private) while in Korea. I don't have a college degree so I was hoping that my presence, plus work experience would present a great opportunity for both parties. I was also hoping that this would allow me to forego signing a year long contract. I plan to stay for six months or so, but I want to travel around Asia and I would hope that because I am flying myself over that wouldn't be necessary in a contract. Does this sound like I'm assuming too much?
Also, is shipping terribly expensive? I wouldn't mind bringing my laptop with me, but I don't want to take it travelling after I leave Korea. How much would it cost (approximately) to ship it to the states?
Lastly, how much does Korean bedding cost? A previous poster said, "This consists of a mattress cover (often fitted and also serving as a dust ruffle,) another mattress pad, and a quilt" How much would this setup cost? I would like to have my friend pick up the necessary items for me so I can sleep comfortably when I get there.
Thank you for any help you can give me! |

I hope I only have to write this once, but yes I am serious. This is my first post. Once I am in South Korea I hope to post more and help newcomers such as myself. I dislike wasted space in a forum, so reply if you have useful information. If you think this is a crazy idea, please tell me why. Thank you. |

What you are talking about is doable and done often enough, it's just that this board is so concerned about being 'professional' that it's unlikely anyone will offer any friendly advice (you understand what you are talking about is illegal, right?).
A yo plus pillow plus blanket will run you 50,000Won to 100,000Won. I was able to get a nice yo for 50,000 at E-Mart and a faux-mink blanket in Itaewon for 20,000 (just like I had back in the States). |

WOW...just.....WOW...a dumber than usual troll. The funny thing is, he might not even be one.... Instead of a bird in hand you're probably gonna end up w/ a cuff on your wrist... |

Yes, what you are talking about doing is illegal. Not only is it illegal, the government and media are currently on a jag to get rid of people doing what you are planning to do. |

Hey, that is good news! You are going to get some great jobs, save some money, be living the high life, and then you will have the chance to become famous! Yes, a famous writer! I read a book by a fellow like you who got put into jail and it was a pretty good read. While you are in jail try to learn Korean! Only an idiot would come to Korea now with no legit diploma. Have you been reading about the fake diplomas all in the news??? Have you read about the recent problems with teachers???Only a jack ass or a complete idiot would do what you plan to do. But like I said, bring some notebooks and write a book, you will have long days and long nights to work on it~ |

Professional teachers I meant. Just try it. Tell someone that they're not a real teacher. |

Besides the bit about a degree being required to legally get a teaching job here, the OP seems to also have missed the bit about US citizens not being eligible for "working holiday" visas. US tourists get 90 days here. Well, unless they get caught teaching illegally, then maybe they'll get more than 90 days. |

hey OP -
while you're here you should also try to give marijuana to children and rape cops as much as possible.
i mean, if you're going to start talking about breaking laws and being a drooling retard, go for broke, right? why be halfarsed about it? |

Guess I hit a sore spot with some people. I appreciate the information Masta_Don.
I couldn't tell through all of the sarcasm and tasteless analogies; is it illegal to apply for a job once you are in Korea? I would think some places would appreciate not having to fly me over. I don't mind staying on a tourist visa until things are sorted out. Has anyone had experience with this? If not, then please at least help me out with the shipping question and i'll write my story later from prison with cuffs on my wrists for raping cops and selling marijuana to kids.
come on. why are you so bitter? |

It is illegal to do any kind of work on a tourist visa.
It is illegal to teach without a bachelors degree.
It is illegal to teach privately (unless you have an F visa)
Everytime somebody gets caught doing one of the above, it creates a steaming pile of shit for the rest of us here. |

When you come over, I'll be happy to be your friend. Just let me know your address and where you work, then we can be bestest friends. (Until I call immigration.) |
