Air Canada Baggage Limit: WTF?!

It seems Air Canada has lowered their baggage allowance from 2 bags at 70 pounds to two bags at 50 pounds. I don't usually fly this crappy airline (I prefer Singapore, Asiana, etc) but due to last minute booking and limited choice I've got a flight with them.

I have had overweight bags in the past and have gotten away with it. One way is to politely say that I am going there to LIVE for one year, not just a month vacation. I will be teaching and bringing books and materials is necessary.

Has anyone had any success getting on Air Canada with overweight bags? Any tricks I could use?

Thanks for any info. Smile

Hey that might work! Or maybe I should wear something sexy at check in? Smile

Complement people on their English or whatever you can. It helps.

The baggage thing has been in place for a little while now though.

Two weeks ago I had the NICEST check-in lady, (Toronto - Incheon) who made sure I had the best seating area on the plane - likely to be able to stretch out, etc.

She refused to let me put my own bags on the belt - because I looked about 7 mos pregnant.

I was 10 pounds over and still had to pay the excess luggage fee. I think if you "get away with it" then you're super lucky. They're just becoming normal now, I think. If you think it's rough, look into what they let you check in for British Airways or Lufthansa... Air Canada is still pretty generous.

Yeah, some airlines will even weigh your carry-ons.

Air Canada did let me take my guitar as a third piece of checked baggage but waived the extra baggage fee. (Once.)

DO they still weigh the luggage right in front of you at the check-in counter? If so, bring an umbrella and see if you can't wedge it in under the scale a bit and pry upward.

???

I thought Canada went metric, & started using kilograms, in the 1960's?

twg: at least CPN was caught, & didn't last out the full 12 months in Korea. Around 2.5 months. But I concede your point.
