They just had it on Arirang. Korean lawmakers are finalizing legislation in the wake of the CPN situation, requiring all E2 applicants to provide degrees, transcripts, and now Criminal Background checks. They also said that this will go into effect immediately for all E2 applications.

I'm all for this, but I'm hoping they keep the background checks on file somewhere, so we don't have to keep doing it every year.

I do wonder though how many hagwon teachers who got caught with a joint way back in college are going to be ending their careers in ESL.

In Korea anyway. This is going to slow the whole process right down. Great so I could get my shit together in a week for Japan or China but now it's going to take almost 2 months to get an E2 visa. Korea barks and expects everyone to jump out of bed, instead we role over and go back to sleep.

From what I understand there are two possibilities for Canadians. One you can get from the RCMP in Ottawa by submitting your fingerprints (imprinted properly with the right ink) and takes up to 3-4 months to get back to you (see their website). I did this one for US immigration.

The other you can get by walking into a police station or RCMP detachment if you're still at home, pay a fee, and they run your name through their computers, and I'm assuming provide you with a letter. This seems to be the easier/quicker option.

Has Korean immigration made any stipulations as to what kind of background check they'll require, ie: the full slam fingerprint variety?

It sounds like Korean legislators have been spending too much time on Dave's and now also believe the factoid that such a check would have prevented CPN from teaching here. (A factoid is something demonstrably untrue but if repeated enough comes to be believed by most people.) Neil had a clean criminal background check and, like him, most of these crimes are committed by people with clean records.

So just to be on the safe side, let's prohibit those with clean records from teaching as well. Rolling Eyes

I'd say the passport office would be a good place to ask this question.

There also is a possibility of having some charges expunged from one's record after a certain amount of time has gone by. I do not know the process--the RCMP or local police station might know the details.

In the USA, "charge" means you are awaiting court, and on a felony, you'd better not try to flee the country.

"Conviction" means you can't leave the country until the government lets you. That can take years or decades, depending upon your situation.

What about online background checks. Will Korea accept those? These are popular in the USA with employers and there are valid ones available.

Only for new E-2s? I'm planning on renewing mine for at least 2 more years from March next year. If its for everyone I guess I better get one done next time I go home.

Brits:
Any Brits know how easy it is to get one done? I think I looked into it about 2 years ago when I was considering applying for a public school job.. I think you have to apply with your local police force right?

I'm from Surrey and that's always been my 'permanent' address. However my parents recently sold their house and moved to another county (whichever one Bournemouth is in.. I don't even know the name..). So I guess their new house would be my 'permanent' UK address now.. either that or I'm homeless in the UK. So where should I apply for a criminal record check?

The Koreans are monkey-primate level retard for still asking for "degrees".
What a stupid notion.

The background checks are going to be the next chronic disaster.

bingo baby... this will drive up salaries.... gotta love basic economics

but i'm skeptical about the timing... it won't make any difference if it's like the public schools where a criminal record check is needed but one can do it later

the new legislation will make checks mandatory BEFORE getting an E-2 visa?

They can have a copy of it, but I won'ty give them the original. I already lost the original RCMP check I gave to the Daejeon idiots (I have a copy for all the good it does me). I still have my Regional check, though.

The FBI site says it take 16-18 weeks IF your prints have been done properly & with the right ink. You wont know if the prints are usable until 6-8 weeks after submission. I'm supposed to have this in EPIK's office by Dec 15th

FBI site says they can POSSIBLY do this quicker if you are under a timeline, after staying up late to give them a call I find out they are overwhelmed with requests (how many from Korea already I wonder??) and it is now estimated at 28 weeks (yes Twenty eight) before it can be delivered to you (with submission of usable prints)

IMPOSSIBLE~!

So after relaying this info to the EPIK office I was directed to this site. Was told that they provide 'acceptable" checks for the EPIK office, but doesnt' say if it will be good for immigration... sigh

www.backcheck.net

They have several different kinds of checks, and EPIK doesnt' say which kind to get, so I'm guessing two checks, 1) sex offenders & 2) federal check (checks you in all federal districts)

Each background check comes with a ssn check, so it's going to show every place I've worked in since my first job at 14. damn I hope I dont have to get a county check for all those places... my family moved around alot & so did I as an adult~!! this could cost a small fortune & make just getting the job too expensive to be worth it~!

I'm hoping the sex offenders will do the trick especiallywith a federal check with it. Still waiting on EPIK to clarify which check they want and waiting to hear back from "backcheck" for a pricing... but they do say they have a 2-3 day turn around so at least you get your record quickly

Are you in the program now or applying? If you are in already I'd tell them to sit down and wait. Bali bali doesn't always happen.
