Hi,

I'm wanting to go to Gurye this weekend to go up to Piagol valley to see some of the autumn leaves and I saw that I can get a train from Daejeon to Gurye. The problem I have though is, that I don't know about places to stay near the train station. If any of you have any information on decently cheap places stay near the station or not too far from the station, that would be great. I'm looking at around less than 50,000won a night if I can.

Any helpers?

Thanks so much,

Mike

Sorry I can't give very good information, but I'll try.

The nearest station is Guryegu Station, but that's actually within the city limits of Suncheon, and is about 5.4 kilometers from the bus station in Gurye. I'd recommend taking a taxi from the train station to the bus station and finding a hotel / motel there. The thing is, I can't be sure if Guryegu Station is still operational. It shows up on a map, but it doesn't show up on the KORAIL site, and it doesn't show up on a map with a Naver search. The reason I say go to the bus terminal is b/c a Naver search only turned up one motel near the train station.

If you can speak a little Korean, or know somebody who can, take a look at this Naver search, and call the numbers listed for motels in Gurye-eup. The "A" result is across the river from Guryegu Station: http://search.naver.com/search.naver?where=nexearch&query=%B1%B8%B7%CA%C0%BE%B8%F0%C5%DA&sm=tab_hty

Also, double check to see if that train station is still operational. If you find something, please reply, as I'm also curious about motel rates in Gurye. Good luck.

Wow Smee, you are always so quick at replying. Thanks so much. I did a search on the Korail site for Daejeon to GuryeGu and it showed up for me....so I guess I'll go to the train station this weekend and double check to see if it's still operational. I hope so. Also, thanks for the recommendation of looking for a hotel near the bus station. Good idea, since I'd have to take the bus anyway to get to Piagol. If I find a good deal, I'll let you know....as long as the weather cooperates this weekend Smile

Thanks,

Mike

Did you go? I'm thinking I may spend a day there this weekend. Were there buses to it from the terminal in Gurye? How much time did you spend hiking to it? I mentioned it at work and the secretary said it's a bit of a hike (although I wasn't sure if she meant to Piagol or just in the area in general).

Sorry man,

I didn't end up going to Gurye after all. Instead I decided to check out Naejangsan as it was a bit closer and the information on the park was a bit more concrete. So I don't really have anything to share about Gurye and Jirisan. I can say though that Naejangsan is a great park and the trails there were very good. I went on a thursday and on some parts of the trail, in fact most of it, I was all by myself. Hiking the ridge at Naejangsan is nice and offers great views. I went there as I heard they have some of the best autumn colors of any park. The colors were alright, but would be a lot better in about 2 weeks when they are supposed to peak. Tomorrow I'm thinking of either going to Gayasan or Songnisan to check out some more of the national park system here.

I was in Gurye in August. Take a taxi from the train station to the bus station. I stayed at a hotel close near the tourist center. Its about 15 minutes from the bus station. Bus 25 I think. From there you can also take a bus to piagol. I paid 35,000w for a small room which was nice. Just pm me if you want more info. The hotels number is 016-653-0373 or 061-783-6661 Its next to a BBQ chicken restaruant which was nice.
