College student unsuccessfully looked for marijuana, found dead looking coed instead and masturbated on her.

Those college days were really crazy, huh?

Robert Chase, Ann Arbor NewsRobert Dickinson of Hastings looks down during witness testimony Monday in the trial of Orange Taylor, charged the December 2006 murder of his daughter. Dickinson sits with family members, including his wife Debra, to his left.

Laura Dickinson died in "every woman's worst nightmare come true," Washtenaw County Assistant Prosecutor Blaine Longsworth told a jury Monday, during the first day of trial against the man accused of killing her.

The 22-year-old Eastern Michigan University student was asleep in her dorm room when she was dragged out of bed in the early morning hours of Dec. 13, Longsworth said in his opening statement.

She was suffocated, strangled, or both - and left half-nude on the floor with semen on her inner thigh and on her bed.
Robert Chase, Ann Arbor NewsOrange Taylor III appears in court Monday.

The man charged in her death, Longsworth told the jury, is Orange Taylor III, now 21, a student Dickinson had apparently never met.

Longsworth said Taylor had been barred from his own dormitory, but was seen entering Dickinson's residence hall at 4:30 a.m. Dec. 13. He also was captured on camera in a stairwell that opened directly in front of Dickinson's door, then leaving the dorm at 6 a.m.

The semen on Dickinson's leg was a match to Taylor, Longsworth told the jury.
But defense attorney Alvin Keel outlined a different version of that night, telling the jury Taylor had been smoking marijuana and went to Hill Hall looking for more.

Taylor found Dickinson "in a compromising position," Keel said. Not realizing she was dead, he ejaculated on her, the defense attorney said in his opening statement.
Keel told the jury that Taylor walked out, leaving Dickinson's purse and laptop computer behind.

In laying the groundwork for a possible defense, Keel noted that an autopsy found no definitive cause of death. And he mentioned that Dickinson suffered an irregular heartbeat in 2005, and she told friends the week she died that she was tired and run-down.

Longsworth called 10 witnesses to the stand Monday afternoon to testify about the last day Dickinson was seen alive, and the day her body was found - more than two days later.

Friends Maria Clary and Joanna Tilton said Dickinson attended a "Secret Santa" party at Clary's apartment on Dec. 12. Dickinson left with a gift bag, purse and keys. There were no drugs or alcohol at the party, they said.

Longsworth played a video for the jury that showed Dickinson entering Hill Hall, where she went up five flights of stairs to her room with two bags, her purse and keys.

Dickinson's long-term boyfriend, Travis Scott, testified that he spoke with her that night. EMU Public Safety Detective Justin Scott testified that she then went online to look at photos of the party, checked the weather, and logged off at 12:21 a.m.

No one spoke to her again. She never logged back onto her computer. She never used her meal card or appeared on dormitory surveillance cameras, witnesses testified.

Custodian Michelle Lockwood said on the stand that she opened Dickinson's door on Dec. 15 in response to complaints about an odor. She looked into the darkened room, backed out and called police.
Robert Chase, Ann Arbor NewsEMU Lt. Jeffrey Nesmith testifies about the crime scene at Hill Hall.

EMU Lt. Jeffrey Nesmith said that soon after arriving at the room, he called the Michigan State Police crime laboratory to the scene. He also said that before any photos were taken, he lifted the pillow covering Dickinson's face and replaced it.

"I wanted to make sure ... if we had a homicide, we would get the best staff in that we could," he testified.

Taylor was arrested almost 10 weeks later.

Until his arrest, EMU officials never revealed Dickinson might have been killed - a decision that led to national media attention, the firing of the university president and the forced retirements of two other administrators.

The trial also has drawn media attention, including coverage from Court TV. Dickinson's parents were joined by nearly a dozen supporters in two rows of the courtroom, while Taylor's family sat across the aisle.

The trial was set to resume again Tuesday morning.

EMU murder trial jury deadlocks, judge declares mistrial

The Ann Arbor News October 23, 2007 16:27PM

A judge declared a mistrial in the murder case against a former Eastern
Michigan University student after the jury reported it was hopelessly
deadlocked following two-and-a-half days of deliberations.

Orange Taylor III, 21, was ordered remanded to the county jail to await a
new trial on charges he sexually assaulted and killed another student,
Laura Dickinson, 22, in her dormitory room last December. Washtenaw
County Circuit Judge Archie Brown set a new trial date on Jan. 28.

Speaking minutes after Brown announced Taylor's case will be tried by a
new jury, several members of Taylor's family sounded confident that he
will ultimately be found innocent.

"My son will be vindicated of all charges," said Taylor's father, Orange
Taylor Jr.

"True enough, he was a young man, in the wrong place at the wrong
time," the father said.

The case, he said, has given his son "a mega-dose of reality. I think this
will make a better person out of him, but this was a very painful way for
him to mature."

"We feel that the prosecution never proved its case," said Taylor's
stepbrother, Genero Cofield.

"Our hearts go out to the Dickinson family on the loss of their daughter.
But we do not feel Orange Taylor had anything to do with her death."

Members of Dickinson's family declined to talk to the news media after
the mistrial was declared.

Prosecutors and police allege Taylor slipped into Dickinson's room in the
middle of the night while she was sleeping and attacked her. Her body
was discovered two days later, lying on the floor near her bed, naked
from the waist down and a pillow over her head.

Taylor's attorneys argued during the five-day trial that Dickinson was
already dead when he entered the room. They maintained that although
he masturbated over the body, he did not kill her.

Investigators testified during the trial that fibers from Taylor's clothing
were all over the bedding as well as on Dickinson. They said his semen
was found on one of her thighs and a tampon was thrown across the room.

Taylor is charged with open murder, including two versions of first-degree
murder; assault with intent to commit first- or third-degree criminal
sexual conduct, home invasion and larceny from a building.
