English Teachers Gather in Seoul
Staff Reporter
An international conference is open to English teachers who are eager to improve their classes. Korea Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (KOTESOL) will host its annual conference Oct. 27-28 at Sookmyung Women's University in Seoul.
It is the biggest conference of its kind to help English teachers exchange tips and ideas inviting renowned scholars and professors in the English language teaching (ELT) field.
Under the theme, ``Energizing ELT: Challenging Ourselves, Motivating Our Students,'' the conference will have several ELT experts from around the world including Jeremy Harmer, a famous ELT author, Thomas S.C. Farrell, professor of Applied Linguistics at Brock University, Neil Anderson, former president of TESOL and Mike Levy, head of the School of Language and Linguistics at Griffith University.
They will present and discuss various topics such as ``The Influence of Korean Phonology on English Pronunciation'' ``Hagwon (private cram school) Mothers and Korean Teachers' Views of Teachers'' and ``Materials Development for Courses in Cross-Cultural Communication.''
``I am confident that all who participate in this event will return to their classes invigorated by an intensive weekend of workshops, lectures and networking among colleagues,'' KOTESOL President Marilyn Plumlee said.
Established in Seoul in 1992 for both Korean and non-Korean English teachers, KOTESOL is a professional organization to assist its members in their professional development and contribute to the improvement of ELT in Korea.
It also allows teachers to connect with others in the ELT community and find teaching resources in Korea and abroad through KOTESOL publications, conferences and symposia, and chapter meetings and workshops. For more information, visit the KOTESOL Web site, www.kotesol.org.

I have heard people on this and other messaging boards complain about the quality of the teachers in Korea, as well as the training of teachers (or lack thereof) in general. Well, my questions for the board members here are
1) Will you attend?
2) Will this conference be able to make an impact on the EFL teaching situation here in Korea? A minor or major one?
3) Do you expect to see any major gains/improvements in your own teaching skill if you do attend?
Mod- if this is posted elsewhere on the forum, you can delete this thread.
I haven't quite decided yet if I shall attend or not. I have to be in Seoul this weekend anyway but I haven't decided yet if this is worth my time or not. It might be for you, the reader, after all. |

I was wondering if anyone applied for a job with this recruiter and what their experiences were like.
Thank you |

1. Yes.
2. KOTESOL has had conferences for years. Will this ONE conference make a big difference? On a large scale that is highly unlikely- but on a personal level, if you hit up some of the good workshops it can have a very positive affect on your personal teaching situation (giving you ideas, inspiring you, etc.). If you end up at a dull workshop it can affect your level of sleepiness at that given moment.
3. I don't think any 2 day workshop can provide an instant cure/upgrade for your teaching- in the same way I am skeptical about any short term assistance greatly impacting long term situations (nary a self-help book on my shelves). Moments of epiphany are rarely so predictable as to appear on a yearly schedule. That said, professional conferences are a GREAT place to get ideas and connect with colleagues on a personal and professional level.
Cheers. |

I'm really looking forward to going, I live in Kangneung and some of my coworkers went last year; I've heard nothing but positive things about it so am making a special trip to Seoul to attend.
If you are interested in sharing the cost with me, I will be unable to attend Sunday so if you wish you can take my badge and go to the Sunday workshops and I'd be delighted to take 30,000 won from you.
My number is 010 6871 0594. Give me a call before 2pm on Saturday if you want in. |
