A school offered me a decent salary but learning about my hours, it's not so much anymore. My hours are like 10am-8pm. Is this normal for teaching in Korea? That's 200 hours per month! What are your work hours? |

That's crap. There's much better out there. It may be a split shift, but still it will ruin your health. You don't need a four lunch break waiting to go back to work. It can be difficult enough settling in without working yourself to death.
30hrs a week is standard in a hagwon, with a schedule that isn't too spread out. Usually afternoon to evening, my last hagwon I worked from 4pm to 10pm mon to fri, including prep time. Public schools are between 20-25 hours 830 to 430 mon to fri. |

You should be paid {hourly wage x 150%} per working hour in excess of eight ( 8 ) working hours. This doesn't include time used for breaks. So, there'll be problems with getting paid for extended works correctly. On the other hand, your employer will include little clause in the contract that stipulates, "Preparation shall not be calculated as or towards overtime hours." Many hagwon labor contracts include that. That is done for the sole purpose to avoid paying the employee for working extended works. The hours are long and you'll get burnt out quickly. Move on.

Are you serious??? 4pm-10pm? That's awesome! That's only 6 hours a day! Can I ask about how much your salary for that 4pm-10pm position was? I'm wondering...even if they're working me to death, maybe they're paying me decent. |

You know what? My contract says absolutely NOTHING about overtime. I checked it up and down. So it doesn't have anything about preparations not being calculated toward overtime. Hmm...I wonder if they just took out overtime altogether also to avoid paying employees extended works.
So is there a law that states foreigners legally are supposed to work only 30 hours a week and anything over that is overtime? Could you refer an official website or something. I'd like to talk to try to negotiate with them about this. |

If your pay is high, take it. If it's average, no. |

Yes, it's called the Korean Labor Standards Act. Post your contract in this thread so everyone can take a look at it. Include the salary as well. |

That was for around 2.2m. I should have negotiated for more as should everyone. You can find much shorter working hours than the one were offered. Also try to get it written into the contract exactly what your hours will be. Promises on the other end of a phone line or via email aren't going to protect you. |

I am working from 1:30-10:30 Monday through Friday for 2.2 million won. The time has gone by fast so far, but the only quality free time I have is on the weekends. I would much rather work from 8-5 or normal school hours 8-3. |

16 hour days at BERLITZ Korea about 7 years ago.
"Swiss Cheese" schedule - 2 hours teaching / 3 hour break / 3 hours teaching / 2 hour break, etc.
6:45am - 9:10pm
6 days a week.
First and only school where I've ever seen bunk beds in the teacher's break room - and they were used frequently!
I lasted 4 months! |

Some of my friends work at a hagwon that pays 2.0 (with no bonus after a year), and they work from 9:00am - 6:00pm/7:00pm/8:00pm. They get a break, but it's only thirty minutes (well it's an hour and a half but I guess an hour of it is prep).
Also, they get screwed with about 10 hours of report cards each month (depends how fast you type: 50 x 250 words). I'm so glad I don't work there |

Incognito, tell your friends that at the end of the contract they should go to the labor board and tell them the school isn't paying them the year end bonus. They are entitled to it and it doesn't matter what the contract says, because it's KOREAN LAW! |

10am-8pm sounds to me like kindy in the morning (10-noonish) then a break until maybe 2 or 3pm, then work til 8 (elementary and maybe middle school). Not bad (I've done similar gigs), but it depends A LOT on how close to the school your apt. is! If you're more than 10 minutes away, forget it!!! |

I'm doing a kindy starting in November (it's in my contract), but my pay goes up to 2.6. I can't complain. |
