Hi,
I didn't see this posted, although to be fair, I barely even checked.
I don't have a link but on CBC this morning our own Dave Sperling was interviewed to give his opinion on....well, I'm sure you can guess.
Anyway, I thought Dave handled the questions well, although the idiot they had on before him was demonizing ESL teachers like a hopped up Inquisition judge.
Anyway, you might see the interview here, but I'm on dial-up right now so I can't search for it. www.cbc.ca

I'd check the link but we'd probably discover life on Titan before my dial-up would download the video.
Although even if it isn't the one, I have to say that I generally find anything having to do with Giant Hog Barns immeasurably interesting.
BTW, the program is literally called CBC News: Sunday, and the two hosts, whose names I don't recall, are actually VERY good interviewers and I could tell that they weren't buying in to the lynch-mob mentality proffered by the previous guest. I wish I could post the link for you, because it was fun to watch Dave go to bat for the ESL community.

For what it's worth, here's the link...I don't know if there's a video link to it but it is on tonight I believe if any of you actually get access to the CBC.

I love that map they used of Asia. It looks like a 14 year old drew it on on his Apple ][. WTF. |

I thought Dave would be a better public speaker, but I guess I'd be nervous on national tv, too.
He should've mentioned the OUTRAGE we feel and the fact that one poster (Kermo) was partially responsible for IDing Christopher Neil.
I wish the program would look at some statistics instead of using scaretactics. ESL teachers are no more likely to abuse kids than parents, police, other teachers, plumbers, etc.
And I wish they would've talked about the fact that police checks won't help catch pedophiles as they often don't have criminal records.
Stupid, typical mass media programming. |

Yep, dead on.
Watched it. And thought the first guy just demonised the esl teachers.
Yes there is a lack of regulation but ESL teaching is fairly new to South Korea. The idea of weeding out paedophiles is a new phenomenon everywhere, it's only really taken place in the last five of so years in the western world. Police checks etc. The media hype around in England in literally everyday. You'd think you could walk round a corner and see one such is the coverage it has.
Agree that it was lumping us all together. Check out the catholic/christian church, what checks to they have? At my church (20 years ago) there was a guy who used to help out with the altar servers. He, as we now know, was a paedophile. It took 20 years of children complaining to the Nun's and priest for anything to happen. They covered it up. Finally something got done. This was a classic example of closing ranks.
Another quick question, the first idiot was linking teaching in South Korea to teaching diplomas, and said that you can get these tefl certs online, and do tefl courses. What does this have to do with teaching in South Korea? Can't you teach in South Korea with just a BA? Making the assumption than Paedos will get a teaching cert before coming to teach is laughable. Maybe that's the way to catch them?????? |
