I've got a buddy who wants to come here from the states. Has a couple of DUI charges and wonders how this will affect him getting a job. Anyone have experience with this? |

according to the times or some other paper, the consulate will deny those with sex offenses, narcotics charges, and charges related to diploma forgery......
I would hope they block those with serious felony charges as well.
I doubt DUI will matter. But, who knows for sure. I guess we'll start hearing the stories in December...... |

Of course DUI doesn't matter since Koreans still have their licenses and drive after a DUI, but are warned that they must take taxi after drinking or face bigger troubles. As such for a Korean friend, he probably bought his license back since his parents have big money.
I would say immigration and schools should be concerned about anything like child sex/porn charges(they usually don't have passport or can't leave home country anyhow), child abuse, and anything else that was a direct mean and damaging assault on a child. As for drugs, alcohol, and driving offenses, I can't see how they can put children and their education at risk unless you are doing drugs, alcohol, and dangerous driving with kids on time that is their time to learn.
We will see how criminal record checks work out for those with a record come next year. I am sure it won't be much different as public schools and some hagwons already required criminal record checks. I am thankful I didn't get in trouble for anything, despite driving home drunk once when I was 19 and smoking herb in college. |

I posted a thread earlier where I was curious whether my Minor in Possession of alcohol would prevent me from getting a job. I got many resonses saying that it wouldn't prevent me from getting a job in Hakwons but does any one know if this will prevent me from getting a job in public schools? My offence is still on my record because I was just over 18, I am 27 now, and have graduated high school and college since with no new additions to the criminal record. So I guess a good question is do public schools want you to just have a completely clean record or are some offenses allowed? Anyone have a direct experience with this? |

it doesn't change from school to school, since the process is the same for each visa...private or public, its immigration that will determine if you get a visa or not...so again, the listed offences will be the ones that prevent you from getting a visa, and again hopefully the more serious ones as well... |
