i'm super pissed off about it too ... my ratio was freaking awesome!
i'm sure they'll be back ... demonoid has been busted twice and come back. piratebay and isohunt have also been forced to move.
oink backs up their database daily. so i'm sure they'll turn up again. |

Relax! Some of us only check a couple of the forums on this site. Who has time to go through the "off-topic" forum everyday!?

Also, not a big fan of Oink, but it's always sad to see a tracker getting nailed! Apparently, they're going after "the identities and activities of the users", now!! OOOH....

| I loved oink but it had such a restrictive upload/download policy. I don't mind leaving a torrent on over night and I have 1.5 to 2 ratio at most of my sites but oink you were lucky if you downloaded and anyone was getting any up from you. |

What? Hard to share on Oink??!! Were you really a member of oink? Boosting your ratio is soooo easy...don't you listen to top 40 music?
BTW Indietorrents doesn't seem to be working either...bummer. |

there's an off topic forum??? i only like the tech and buy/sell/trade forums ... i occasionally read the general topic forum. besides, bit torrents are technology ... so oink getting busted ought to be here!
i disagree that it's hard to keep up a good ratio on oink. mine hovered around 3.2 depending on how much i was downloading ... the secret is not seeding other people's music, but uploading your own music, especially in flac format. you get 300-400mb straight up with the first download and that boosts your ratio quite a bit.
i uploaded about 30 torrents and it gave me plenty of ratio to go crazy downloading 10 gig of music. when they were shut down my ratio was about 2.6 ...
i miss oink! ... looks like it's back to demonoid for a while! |

The main question is, where do you get the music to upload in the first place?
It seems like you gotta go out and buy a CD to rip to and upload. By the time you go out and buy the CD, rip, and upload there are already 20 torrents of the same CD. |

ah-ha! not always grasshopper!
a trick i used is to get good quality albums from other places. sometimes i'd have it on CD (like an old goreki symphony i was still hanging onto), and other times i'd download music from demonoid or other places.
oink does allow this, but only if you ensure the quality of the recording that you get from another torrent site. if you don't check the quality, users will complain when the download it and you get a warning.
another good trick is to upload in different formats ... when you upload a torrent, you can upload in mp3 quality superior to the highest previous available upload. so if there's a 192kbps album (192 is minimum btw) then upload the same album at a higher rate, like 320kbps.
you can then also upload it in flac and ogg formats too ... as long as the format is different or the mp3 bitrates are superior, you can upload 2 or 3 different versions.
some people who want to download the album will take the mp3s because the download size is smaller. audiophiles who want to collect the albums will download the lossless flacs.
for you, that's win win ... cause you get people taking your single album in multiple formats!
... fyi ... when i first joined i spent nearly a week reading all the faqs and how tos ... before i uploaded and downloaded music. it really, really helped because the community is very picky about music and quality. |

The thing is, I would gladly pay for a service like that. There is NO database in the world, even Itunes, with that kind of music selection. It was INSTANT downloading, and you could find ANYTHING. And I really mean that: ANYTHING!
I boycott Itunes because of the horrible format (they require you to burn them to CD in order to convert them to MP3, a waste of CDs and creates garbage)... and not everything is available there.
Even beatport.com sucks, since they won't accept a credit card being used in another country from its origin. BLAHCK!! |
