Now that I've got your attention: Taliban spokesman are claiming that some of their men have been tortured by Canadian forces in Afghanistan. This is the second allegation made public in less than a year.

Normally, I would laugh--or rather sneer--and ignore the charge, considering that it comes from scumbags who exploit the leftwing rags in the West for their own narrow propoganda purposes.

But since keane/EFLT and his motley Canuck crew are always so quick to seize on even an intimation of American military torture of Muslim "fighters," I'd say this is poetic justice.

Now watch all the moonbat politicos in Toronto and Ottawa run around clucking about this allegation, wringing their collective wrists, and insisting that they'll get to the bottom of this, or else resign their posts in protest. Of course, now that a conservative government is back at the helm, maybe they won't be so easy to balk.

Canada brushes off allegations of Afghan torture
By David Ljunggren
Mon Oct 29, 2007

Canada brushed off [how cavalier of them] allegations on Monday that Taliban members captured by Canadian troops and handed over to Afghan authorities had been tortured, saying the militants often made false claims of mistreatment. Canada's minority Conservative government, which ran into serious trouble when faced with similar accusations earlier in the year, signed a deal with Kabul in May allowing Canadian officials unlimited access to prisoners. Ottawa said the deal would combat torture. But the French-language daily La Presse [as if the French are arbiters of moral conduct in the field of battle] said on Monday it had found three prisoners who alleged inmates had been beaten with bricks and cables, given electric shocks, deprived of sleep [oh, the terror of it all] and had their nails torn out [what, forced manicures?]. "We do expect these kind of allegations from the Taliban. It is their standard operating procedure to engage in these kinds of accusations. I'd caution ... against taking them as the word of the truth," government minister Peter Van Loan told Parliament.

Opposition politicians [the usual "patriotic" crew] said there were serious doubts as to whether the May deal could protect prisoners.

"We now have headlines in the paper that suggest Canada is facilitating a process of torture. This is extremely serious [why, yes, it's of paramount importance to their reputation among the Taliban, as if the latter would act differently now]. It's also serious under international law," said Jack Layton, leader of the left-leaning New Democratic Party. Human rights experts, speaking earlier this year, said Canadian soldiers could be guilty of war crimes [and in the STFU Dept.] because they transferred the detainees at a time when Ottawa was aware that Afghan authorities regularly tortured prisoners [oh, how egregious].

International conventions prohibit a country from handing over prisoners if there is reason [so any allegation regardless of the source must be taken seriously?] to suspect abuse. The three suspected Taliban members said they had been captured by Canadian troops, given a document that said torture was no longer used in Afghanistan and then transferred to the Afghan secret police.

"The people from the secret service tore it (the document) up and threw it in my face. They tortured me for 20 hours. I protested and said the Canadians had promised that nothing would happen to me," La Presse quoted one of the three men as saying.

"They replied: 'We're not in Canada, we're at home. The Canadians are dogs!"' he said. [As opposed to the Taliban remnants, who are egalitarian crusaders for justice, I suppose?]

La Presse said it had conducted the interviews in Sarpoza prison [now that it's done covering the Sarkoskys' separation] in the southern city of Kandahar, where Canada's 2,500-strong military mission is based.

I don't know about that. Most Canadians I know take the Afgan mission seriously. Also from what I understand, The Conservitive and MM2 are Canadian.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I know that's true. And Canadians should be proud of their involvement. I'm referring to the left fringe, especially those who emigrated to Canada for its benefits rather than its obligations. And, of course, those Canadians who don't miss a chance to criticize American standards of ethical conduct.

You're an idiot on so many levels Stevie.

Poetic justice? Do you really feel that great about other nations being inviolved in torture?

Does it make you feel better? Does it legitimize you nations techniques?

This eye for an eye sentiment of yours Steve is frickin childish.

"Well, well they're doing it too Ma!"

Idiot!

Or perhaps there will be some honest dialogue going on and Canadians will start to have an open debate about weither the ends justify the means.

Two things that aren't going on in your country. At least to the levels many of us would like to see them at.

Having hearings about the use of torture doesn't mean your country is a puzzy. It means you have a civilized government that obeys the rule of law.

Well torture doesn't bring a smile to my face like some people. But you're obviously a sick and disturbed bastard.

So hey!

Ask a Canadian.

However, observing members of the 'Coalition of the Willing' slink away one by one, being a friend of America seems to be the kiss of death.

Dude! I'm an American! I don't have to ask a Canadian anything. They are always 100% willing to tell me their opinion!

1) One word: Somalia
2) Let's see some pictures
3) I wouldn't be surprised but I'd be pretty dissapointed
4) Canadians, in my opinion, would actually react pretty strongly if these allegations proved true.

Obviously you don't listen to the opinions of your Northern neighbours, which is terribly rude of you, otherwise you would know how much the Free Trade Agreement screwed them in the a$$, and how the US basically owns Canada right down to their national sport.

The Canadians and Australian I've met while working overseas tend to be quite self-righteous.

Some, well, most Canadians do tend to be extremely self righteous. As for the Aussies, not as many.
