And...so what?

Alot of F's may be poor but they still have smiles on their faces.....something you barely see on the faces of Korean people in the street.

A change in wealth or living standards doesn't neccessarily bring a change to one's heart and soul.

The article gives few examples of the disdain that the writer expressed so I can't comment any further.

Gosh, I'm really tired of having to kiss proverty stricken bronze Philippino *ss. "Its really admirable how poor they are. Its so charming." "Look how much they have to clean just to live! Aren't they the best?"

Korea and The Philippines are apples and oranges. The Philippine is made up of many people groups, whereas Korea has one people group. Also, in my opinion Korea has had more help and less exploitation.

your absolutely right. and it's hard for there to be some sort of unity within a country that has, what, 180 languages and mutliple ethnicities when historically the tagalogs have been active as the dominant group exploiting others.

add to this that they don't even have a national language other than some hybrid of english.

tonybalony is right in that the 'poor but smiling' and 'happy in their misery' crap has got to stop being peddled by foreigners and filipinos alike. they should not be happy with their conditions, there is nothing to be happy about.

this essay has been circulated on so many different sites. it's absolute trash.

of course many koreans would like to chalk up their relative success to a nationally-spirited penchant for hard work. but that's crap. 100 years ago the philippines and korea were indistinguishable. whatever happened to korea in the last 60 years didn't happen in the philippines but has nothing to do with hard-work and more to do with other issues not nearly as flattering to the korean ego as they might assume.

one thing about the philippines that is leaps and bounds above korea's maturity is their ability to see their 'nation' as a relatively recent construction and not something that's been around for thousands of years.
in many ways the philippines is a very advanced place--art, literature, cultural studies, social theory, cosmopolitan outlook. in other ways it is hopeless.

I didnt think the article was that bad. It could have been a whole lot worse.. at least the author attempted to make a cohesive argument and organized the paper in a logical way... well, maybe until the end when he started talking about going to chuch and praying...

You can see why old people in Korea are nationalistic -- because of Korean history, both old and new -- and this essay just sums up their perspective, I think.

Its a very subjective perspective and, like most things Korean, It is very short-sighted. What if every country were as nationalistic as Korea? What if the "love" every person in every country showed only for that country meant acting the way Koreans do toward people in other countries? The answer: We wouldnt have any countries because everyone would be dead! But Koreans will be Koreans because of history, cutlure, and circumstance.. use them as a model of how not to be....

Good Luck. I mean that. Its a tough problem and i don't even want to talk about it much less think about it. I think the Pinoy have too many children, but not just them, plenty of others too. Good luck.

My former 'senior' teacher used to express the sentiment in this article, i.e., "Korea used to be same as Phillipines - Korea rich now - Phillipines poor now = Korea good/best etc." "Koreans love all Koreans - Koreans love Korea etc."

This is just an example of Confucian ranking - and it's illogical bedfellows - Korean brainwashing and nationalistic patriotism.

Ask yourself, if Koreans all love Korea and other Koreans - why don't they look after their illegitimate children? Why do they shun these children and export them overseas? And why do they abort female fetuses in favor of male fetuses? And why do they allow their respected 'elders' to scrape an existence by collecting garbage and recycling materials?

Hmmm - something doesn't appear logical in this article.

Things here have progressed slowly but evenly except for the money part which went must faster and to be honest, thats the most important part.
Things are bad for the above mentioned but they are much better now than before.

They don't export their kids, they allow for adoptions. There is a pension scheme now where there wasn't before. Asia has a problem with female infanticide but its better than it was and much better than other places.
The gov't would do well to offer more pensions to families that have female babies.

This board often derides Korea on its singleness but here is an unchallenged assertion of too many different groups being a detriment to progress.

I'm no multiculturalist and I think the limited number of social factors in korea helped.

Oh yea, when I was in the PI, a Pinoy mom instructed her daughter to beg from me. When I didn't give anything, she gave a hand signal to her child to pickpocket me. I also ran into some aggressive guides that made it clear they had children and then they needed money and that I had money that I didn't need and I should be much more grateful with the guide services that were forced me.

I have not been to Philippines, but from all accounts I have heard, most of this is true about them.

But about Korea, I have to disagree. Korea has been traditionally corrupt and authoritarian. I don't believe people here love their country. They love for the success of their country for their own gain. They slit each other's throats on a regular basis.

But then again, disagree with me if you please.
