I'm looking for a small form-factor PC for my mother-in-law. She is anal about things looking clean and free of many wires, so I'm also thinking of notebooks. There is also a tiny PC called a Little Lluon that I thought looked good.
I have been looking at things in the 600,000-700,000 won range (limits my choices a lot).
She'll only be doing e-mail and web stuff.
I want something extremely easy to learn. XP? Vista? Is Vista easy with e-mail? I'd love to have some kind of simple 1-click solution for that.
Should I consider a Mac Mini, or are they just too incompatible with most Korean sites? |

Macs are usually prettier, but ridiculously overpriced.
If the wires are a big deal check the desk setup to make sure you can hide things well or maybe go for a laptop. (Lots less wires, but again, not as much computer for the money.)
If she'll only be doing e-mail and web stuff you can skimp on things like video card. Also, processor won't be that important, hard drive size won't be important, but one with decent speed would be nice. Most importantly, get as much RAM as possible. I'd go with an XP system, as Vista is still immature.
P.S.
If she wants to listen to music at all don't expect to get anything good out of laptop speakers, you'll need to get real ones. Lots of wires there though, so you might want to try wireless speakers which are unfortunately either pricey or crappy. |

I bought my Korean gf a Macbook. She is able to use it for most things in Korea, but did point out that many sites don't work (i.e internet banking). |

I have less problems with seeing Korean sites on my MacMini at home than on my XP computer at work, but I never do anything that needs a password. MacMini's as many wires as any other desktop computer, but they are small and unobtrusive.
It sounds like what you need is a used computer, and it is hard to get used Macs in Korea. Do you know where the used computer shops are where you live? If you are in Daejeon, the used computer shops are in Tanbang-dong.
A MacMini is good for me because I move a lot. |
