I've seen this way too many times and I compelled to write about it. What's the deal with guys carrying purses? I don't mean a messenger bag or one of those small businessman bags. I am talking about a full on woman's style purse. WTF?
Just now I saw this big Korean guy, I would not want to fight this dude...and this guy was carrying a giant fake Louie V bag. It looked so out of place. And right after I passed him I saw a guy and girl walking together. It looked like he was carrying her purse...Until I noticed that HIS purse was bigger than hers and it was not his girls purse but his own!
What do you guys think? I've never seen a non-Korean guy sporting this look. How do you think people would react in your home country to this trend? Also, I haven't seen these purses anywhere else in Asia...Have you? |

I'm confused as to why this is posted in the job-discussion forum. |

I haven't seen men with women's purses of their own. I have seen men with messenger type bags and their girlfriend/wife's purses.
But really, who the hell cares? |

I like men who carry my purse. (Or, as was the case yesterday, my tripod.)
I was once talking to my taekwondo master. I said I needed to get some makeup but didn't want to drag my boyfriend with me.
"Why not?"
"Because he's a guy. He'll be bored."
"No. Atavistic, Korean man just want be with woman, not care what do. Makeup shopping, OK!" He wife nodded at me with a grin.
I said, "I know how Korean men are," I threw my HUGE bag at him. He did exactly what I expected and hoped he'd do. He slung it over his shoulder and pranced around his living room. In his dobok.
Master is a big guy. He's not one of these skinny Koreans. He's got muscle on him and he's tall. Watching this tall, strong, 5th deg black belt strut across his living room with my bag cracked me up.
As for how people in my home country would react...well, most of the men there are too caught up in screwy ideas of masculinity to ever be caught dead carrying a non-work-related bag or their girlfriend's bag. Luckily, I'm not dating one of them.
(On a somewhat related note, a few weeks ago my boyfriend and I met some friends of ours. They're another Western female/Korean male couple. Us girls were trying to describe "whipped" to the boys. After taking a turn down the S&M path (because the guys were not understanding) we got them to understand what it meant. They just gave us blank stares. They said, "You make us happy, we make you happy, you smile, we're more happy, what's the problem?" The young (25-30) Korean men I know think like that. It's a different approach to masculinity here.) |

i don't know how true this is, but i've heard many guys over here change completely after there's a ring on the girl's finger. |

I would agree we shouldn't mock guys for carrying bags (too much, anyway), but its a big jump to then say Korean men care about their wonen's happiness more. I've seen the way a lot of Korean men treat their wives and girlfriends. Its all nice that they say, "She's happy, I'm happy", but I know a lot of Western guys who say the same thing. They certainly do have a different idea of masculinity here. But I'd wait to be married to one of these men before I make a judgement call on it. |

Yeah, I know that I select my group of friends very carefully. And many of these men ARE married.
Also, I think there is a huge jump between men in their 40s and men in their 20s here. I don't think the men in their 20s are going to grow up to be like men in their 40s.
Still, what I found interesting about the conversation was that in the west men would jump up and down defending themselves, "I'm not whipped!" (even when they, well, are) but here the guys I know are like, "Yeah, what's the big deal?" |

So do women. No different than the West.
But I hang out with really nice married, coupled, and single guys. Like I said, I choose my friends carefully. |

i've seen plenty of men carrying THEIR OWN purses. it's not the girl's bag. and like the OP said - PURSES. not messenger bags. people complain about the annoying "oppppaaa sound" k-girls make. just today i heard a korean guy whine "ahhh ajjjoooshhiiii" when a meter maid gave him a parking ticket. |

If these 'guys' are supposed to be the ones defending the ROK in case of invasion, I pray the USFK doesn't leave anytime soon. Think I'll buy a goodwill round next time I'm out. |
