Please don't hack into with jokes on this one.

In the public school system if you have two years of experience and a 100 hour TEFL course you can earn an additional 300,000won a month... that may just be enough to keep me sticking around this dump. (joke)

My question is, is it possible to do a 100 hour course in two weeks? I've seen many adverts for one month 100 hour courses, but I have to see my family after this contract for a bit or my mother is probably going to disown me. I'm quite sure there's no TEFL course offered within a reasonable commute of my family's abode so that option is out.

I think it's a guesstimate, I've heard you can finish em fairly fast (over a 3 day weekend and such). I've no personal experience with it however.

I wanted to say...100 hours but I'll refrain from it sir.

Naah. It would take at least 3 weeks, depending on which TEFL course you chose.
Some courses are test only. In theory, you could take the test a few days after you receive the study material.
For courses that have a tutor, you have to submit assignments to them; they grade them, and send them back. There is a built-in delay in that course so I would say it would take 3 weeks at least. These type of courses usually don't have a test.

But this is something you have to think about- if you go for the test and cram, do you think you can pass? Let me rephrase- remember your college years? Do you remember ever passing a final exam with no prior knowledge of the course after a few days of studying?
I wrote about this over on the other thread, page 14 or whatever.

That describes a lot of my university education, and I have a "professional" degree Laughing

I did, however, have to work to eat during those years!

I took a 100 hour TESOL course online and finished it in about 3 or 4 weeks. The readings were not difficult, but the assignments they give for each of them can take a long time. I completed mine in my free time at my public school and sometimes on the weekend. The part that sucks though is that the tutors sometimes don't respond to emails in a timely fashion and I could only have 2 chapters at a time. Thus, if I finished and emailed the assignments late on Thursday, I may not get the next 2 chapters until Monday.

One more thing, you can't jump up 2 pay levels in one year with most public schools. You can either go from Level 3 to 2, or 2 to 1, but not 3 to 1. You may be looking at a raise of only 100,000/month, though it's still about an extra 800k/year depending on the course price.

I did mine with KEI and I completed it in quick time, though I took a break part way through.... I probably did 2 weeks of solid work on it, totalling around 80 hours.

I got me my PS payrise with minimal fuss and cost around 200K

If you want to do it, do it right away so that you start next year with the extra 200K with no fuss at all Wink

The GEPIK contract is for 2.0, 2.1 and then 2.3

Assuming the OP already has his 1 year experience he will already be on 2.1, so getting the TEFL will bump him up to 2.3 once he has 2 years under his belt.

Yeah, that's the plan. I have one year down, actually two years and two months as of right now. I'm making 2.1 now and was hoping to jump up to 2.3 if I re-sign with GEPIK.

I didn't know that they would accept online TEFLs. I thought they had to have live classroom experience?

If I could do one that would be cake. I could re-sign and visit my fam for one whole month and do the online course from the comfort of my mom's PC.

Do they really accept online TEFL certifications? What are my options as far as cost and quality?

I sent you a PM with details...This information is covered in another thread titled "Online Quickie TEFL" so it is possible this thread will be deleted by the mods.

Just to let you know the acceptance of TEFL certificates is regulated and they will accept any online degree or certificate just as long as the institute or company is accredited, licensed, registered, and recognized as being legitimate...

I did mine online through KEI. The course was 100 hours & definitely accepted by GEPIK. When I first started at my school, I had an ample amount of free time. I sat around for 2 1/2 weeks actually. I was able to finish the 100 hour online course in under two weeks. It's very possible...it just depends on how determined you are.

I'm also with GEPIK. I started Aug 25th and received my online 100 hours of completion around October (however it was dated for September). The raise was effective Sept so I got the payraise on my paycheck immediately.

However, I think it depends on your handler and your school. My handler is very quick and efficient. The week that I received my certificate was also the week that my handler was able to adjust my pay Smile

I would definitely recommend KEI...I've recommended the program to several ppl already. You can go at your own pace..which is what makes it so attractive.

You're lucky then because your pay raise is supposed to take effect the month after the certificate is dated. Thus, if your certificate states Sept. as the completion date then you should get the pay raise starting in October.

To the OP: If you're at 2.1 now, you should try to finish the online course by the end of your contract so you can get up to 2.3. If you re-sign with GEPIK then you should also get another 100k/month, putting you up to 2.4/month.

Mine, including the practicum, took about 4.5-5 weeks to complete. But mine was 120 hours (6 hours a day) and the practicum (25 hours) was on top of that.

How would the school know it's legitimate? They have enough problems accepting accredited unis.

Believe me, the process is long and tedious to get the licensure and recognition from the Korean government...It is virtually impossible for a non- Korean unless you are fluent in Korean or married to a Korean who can communicate effectively...Overall, the TEFL training industry is relatively small in Korea so it is much easier to check out the qualifications of a program operating under the auspicious of the government than other university programs...

Because the TEFL programs are directly tied to the EFL - ESL industry it has become somewhat easier to manage and keep track of...That is the short answer, but a good questions nonetheless

KEI are accredited by the Korean government. It would be pretty stupid for their schools to then say that it was inadequate Smile

I was asking my coworker about the KEI program. She got on the phone with her superior who said that I could do an online course no problem. But then she went on to say that the pay raise wouldn't happen until my next contract.

This is counter to what I've read in similar threads.

I work for the government public school program in Busan. That's GEPIK now isn't it? When I did my orientation in the spring they said it was BEP.
