I picked up a new class (yay!) consisting of three third graders. We (in another class) just finished A Retrieved Reformation by O. Henry. They understood the story (we were able to discuss morals and whether or not they agreed with the story's moral), but the vocabulary was too difficult.

My boss wants me to focus on critical analysis (something, I think, way over their head), I want to focus on story analysis, and they, of course, want to do listening. I do like CDI's insistence on story books over articles or snippets of reading, becuz it does give them a sense of accomplishment. If I had my way I'd do something like Harry Potter or The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe but my boss already nixed that idea. So, any ideas?

If you have a computer and screen, use many of the materials in our booknook. I'm just finishing the Little Prince, that would be a handful!

Just wanted to say thanks, ddeubel. Bossman didn't want anything too long so that kids joining the class wouldn't be lost. Ended up deciding on the interview with the kid with Tourette's. Should prove to be interesting enough for the students and just about their level.

Your welcome and what a cool thing to share with them! You must be an inspiring teacher. I would like to make more of these stories from that site but just don't have the time.

You might also use the hundreds of video books and A-Z readers, all leveled and with handouts/activity sheets available to our members. They are great for giving students lots of input and then time to solidify the learning through output/discussion.
