5,000 minks freed in Denmark Mon Oct 22, 12:24 PM ET
Thousands of minks escaped from a fur farm in western Denmark possibly set free by animal rights activists, police said Monday.
Authorities and residents were chasing down about 5,000 minks from the farm near Asp, 200 miles northwest of Copenhagen, police said.
Investigators believe animal rights activists raided the farm overnight to set them free but no suspects have been identified, police spokesman Knud Lauridsen said.
Animal rights activists also are suspected of setting some 2,500 minks free from a farm in Finland in August.
Denmark is one of the world's largest producers of mink fur, with Danish fur farmers raising more than 12 million minks every year.

Go minks go, run for you lives! Stupid, ugly women will not get any more beautiful or smarter by wearing the hides of dead mink. |

5,000 minks attack and wipe all indigenous species in Denmark Tues Oct 23, 12:25 PM ET
Savage hateful minks ran amok yesterday destroying the natural wildlife and decimating the indigenous species.
The little mermaid was said to be furious and has thus far refused to come out from 'under the sea'. Ophelia was also unavailable for comment as she floated by numerous dead fish stocks.
The Danish government warned people to stay in their homes. If faced by a mink there is one sure way to kill them, a sharp thrift attack to the head with a large object such as a hammer or a tractor. Also don't feed them after midnight or give them water.

Where's this from, anyway? The Onion? It's kind of funny, if you've been following the coverage these cases always seem to get in the media. |

If they are farm raised, they may all die anyway if they don't know how to hunt for food and whatnot. |

Exactly. Such escapes have occurred before. The result is that people find hundreds of starving and run over minks in the weeks afterwards. Some survive, of course, and then they become a pest species, living in an environment where they are not native. Eating out all the local birds and small mammals.
It may be funny, but in reality its disastrous for the minks and the natural environment round about. Stupid animal rights campaigners have no idea. |

Why so pessimistic?
Would be interesting to conduct a scientific experiment.
Tag a batch of minks, set em' free.
*beep beep beep*
See where they go, what they do etc
Would likely be one of the few ways to PROVE whether what you assert is reasonable & accurate or not.
Dunno bout you Chuck, but if it was me i'd much rather face the risks of an earthly freedom than being kept caged, killed & then skinned.

Depends. If they're European minks, well that's a pretty endangered species and they'll bolster it.
But that's unlikely. |

What's so pessimistic about it?
He's right. If these animals are born and raised on a farm, the likelihood of them having the skills necessary to successfully live off the farm are not particularly high. It drops lower if the animal is not even a native of the ecosystem in question and plummets if it's not near the top of the food chain. There's a reason that pandas born at panda centers have to be trained to live wild or why "releasing" pets onto the streets are frowned upon.
And of all people to claim that someone else is pessimistic. What a crock! |

You do realize that these minks will compete with other small predators, including endangered species? |

The American Mink, Mustela vison, is a North American member of the Mustelidae family found in Alaska, Canada and most of the United States. They are also raised in fur farms for their lustrous fur.
In recent years, animal rights activists have also released several thousands in their attacks on fur farms. Most of these released captive mink quickly died in the wild, preyed on by dogs or run over by cars.
The larger American male will mate with European Mink females earlier in the spring than the males of the same species; the offspring are not born, but the females do not then breed again that season. This has contributed to the decline of the European species. American Mink have also been implicated in the decline of the Water Vole in the United Kingdom and linked to the decline of water fowl across their range in Europe. They are now considered vermin in much of Europe and are hunted for the purpose of wildlife management.
