|
|
I live in a 4 story apartment building on the 1st floor. Can anyone tell me what the etiquette for using the roof is?
I want to have some friends over, get a barbecue going and have a couple of drinks, is this typically okay? How many people would be acceptable to have over? (a rooftop party would kick ass. I have a great view of Seoul Tower on one side and the city on the other, and a house party atmosphere would be great).
The landlord likes me, but I can't speak Korean so i'll have to use that 1330 phone translation service. (If you ever want to experience the movie lost in translation just use that) Anyway, i'm just wondering what that normal rooftop etiquette is here in Korea before I ask her.
Thanks |

Numbers really depends on the space you have. You should definitely invite the other tenants though if you think you'll be making a bit of noise. |

Theres quite a bit of space, at least as far a rooftops go. There are actually two sections so you can have two seperate groups on the roof and they wont even see each other. Theres only one other apt with english people here and I've only met them once and they were older. I'd invite them but i dont know enough korean to even speak with anyone else here... I acutally havn't even seen any of the other tenants here, its weird.
Mostly I'm just wondering whats common when it comes to rooftops here. I was up there earlier today, it was beaughtiful out but nobody was around on any of the other rooftops. Do Koreans ever have lots of friends up on the rooftop? Anyway, thanks for the response. |

I'd probably have a small BBQ first to see how that goes down before launching into a full on rave.
I'm actually thinking about having a party round at my gaff, although it's slightly different as I'm on the 5th floor of a 9-storey apartment block and obviously have neighbours above and below to consider, but I have quite a large balcony area and I've seen a nice little BBQ at Costco for 40,000 and want to invite a few friends round for eats and vodka cranberries once the weather gets warmer.
Incidentally, there was an FT who I knew who went up to Seoul for a big rooftop party a few months back so it sounds like people do throw them, just depends on your own landlord and neighbours really. Take some pics if you do have one. I'm planning on getting some rope lights and a disco ball and maybe have a theme, like a wig party etc. |

My wife told me the thought here is that the rooftops are dirty and whatnot, and therefore people only use 'em for laundry lines and some simple gardens, and not for other things like social occasions. When we invited a couple of our friends for a rooftop barbecue, they thought it was extremely weird at first, but after holding it, they thought it was an extremely novel and fun idea. |

We live in a new 20 story building. The roof has 2 putting greens, a workout area, helipad and stone paths all over it. We just had our 3rd BBQ party tonight. Around 30 people, grilling bratwurst, drinking and munching on salads and snacks. Our Korean security guard just asks that we clean up after we're done. Lights are out at 11:30pm on the roof and there are no outlets so we start around 7 and then adjourn to the apartment or local bar.
Generally as long as we clean up after ourselves and keep the noise down, it is ok.
The only sucky part was that we had to clean up 2 bags of trash some Koreans left up there earlier because we don't want the security guard thinking we left it. So just be clean, even if the Koreans aren't. You're easier to identify and get bitched out.
Cheers! |

Been to rooftop parties with older Koreans and with younger foreigners. Yes, it's done. Don't know much about how to get permission/approval. And green with envy...my rooftop doors are locked, can't even dry laundry or sunbathe up there! |

Also, have a place for smokers to put butt their cigarettes, if there are any. Black ash patches are ugly and it take like 3 rain falls for them to go away. They also might tend to just want to flick them off the edge. So a chair or something with an ashtray on it would be a good idea. |
