This is the official website for criminal records check: ( London Metropolitan area and with links to all other forces:)
http://www.met.police.uk/dataprotection/forms.htm
Please let me know how you get on. Or how long it took if you have already gotten it done. I'm on holiday abroad right now, but I will be applying in 2 weeks time when I get to Korea.
Be aware:
*Most korean banks do not pay cheques or money orders in British punds. Last time I applied (a year ago) it took a whole day to find a bank that could send 10 punds sterling, and I've forgotten which one it was..if you know please remind me.
* Despite the fact I lived in London for a year and paid taxes there, they had no record of me and suggested I apply to another county. If like me, you have lived briefly in several counties, which one is able to supply you with a criminal records check???
* Last question: New regulations apparently require a "national check"- ie one covering the whole country. Is a records check for just one county sufficient though?
Please post any information about the process here. Good luck.. |

I've always got my UK cheques from KEB - I ask for a banker's draft. Never have any problems.
Btw... do us F5 holders need record checks, too? Like you, Julius.. I lived in London for a year for grad school.. although home address was still Derby. Hmm.. if I do need one, may be I need to apply it through Derby?!

That site are a joke. I had to use them for my personal license (for alcohol sales) in the UK. As I had moved about a lot in the past 6 years, they wanted proof of every address.
I was gathering the info required when they obviously got fed up and sent me a nice "no records found" disclosure. This was true enough (I don't have any record), but I had to laugh at how lax their checks were. |

^I didn't have any problems when I applied for mine although, I felt a bit ripped off having to pay 20 for a blank sheet of A4. |

Good info, thanks.
What happens if like me you haven't lived in Britain in the past 10 years??
Ok I worked a year in London in '99, but London police say they can't do me a check as they have no record of me. I graduated in 96. Before then I lived fleetingly in cornwall and Cumbria (studying and schooling)- so I may not be able to get a clearance check.
What am I supposed to do? |

Apply for a basic disclosure. If you haven't been in the UK, then nothing will show during that time. Exactly the same as if you had been in the UK and haven't been in bother with the law. You can still get the check . You must get a postal application though, you've lived outside of the UK for too long to apply online. |

Am appyling for one as we speak, for getting married though, not for a job. Spoke to the woman regarding special circumstances (korea. far. long time. time restraints) and she said I could fax it all to her and she'd fax it back. Then send the paper copy along after it. My family will just go in with the 10 quid. They were uber helpful actually. That's just for the scottish one though. Is everyone going to have to get one of these for each job then? |
