When do you need courage?
What gives you courage?
I recently did this lesson with my students and am now scrambling to answer the question myself. I know what I have to do but am procrastinating. My boss wants me to find a replacement for myself when I leave my contract. I told him I'd try but I told him recently he should find a recruiter. He responded that he was depending on me. He only wants to hire a good looking white male, under 30, from North America. Anyone else is to be rejected. I show him qualified and over-qualified candidates of different genders, races, and nationalities, but only a "handsome guy" will do. I don't feel comfortable doing this and when I ask him why he's so specific he blames it on the students' parents. I think that's an excuse for his own prejudices. I understand that business is competitive here and he can run it the way he likes but it still makes me angry. I'm a 31 yr. old woman, btw, and got the job from a friend because he was really desperate for a teacher. They had never hired a chick before. My way of dealing with this job is to not cause confrontation because everytime I challenge something: the lack of books, erratic schedule, it's chalked up to me not being able to deal because I'm a woman. I guess it doesn't matter now that its nearing the end of my contract, but I'd like to leave with no hard feelings and with all of my pay. Its not in my contract to find a replacement. |

INteresting. I've always suspected gin of being a particularly nefarious beverage. |

You just have to stick to your guns. Write it down if you have to avoid the face-to-face confrontation, but tell him in no uncertain terms that it is not your job, nor is it in your contract, to find a replacement. Give him the names and contact info of two or three recruiters you can trust, and leave it at that.
Everytime he asks for an update, tell him the same thing: "I didn't get you a replacement teacher. I am not going to get you a replacement teacher. That's your job, not mine."
If he was truly depending on you, then he would trust your decision as far as whom you chose, whether that agreed with his handsome man wishes or not. Just tell him the only handsome 30-year olds are pedophile Canadians with fake degrees. |

For me. Knowing that I am in a place that I will never ever return to tends to give me a little courage. If I know I will come back one day to Cohog wherever I tend to be a little more brazen. |

No hard feelings? He's being a sexist pig. Get your pay, thats really important, but don't find a replacement for him and take him to the labour board if he pulls a fast one. Once you get your pay and your contract is over, leave and don't look back. You owe them nothing if they're treating you like this.
Next contract, work somewhere big with many foreign, female teachers. This guy sounds like a deusche. |

Thanks all for the v. useful suggestions. I will write down what I have to say and bring it up with him yet again. I'll wait until tomorrow so he has the whole weekend to be angry with me and then cool off. |
