One of my friend didn't get paid for her work. She should get her pay on the 15th last month, but she still hasn't get paid yet. Today is November 1. It is not the first time they put off her pay. The worst thing is, every time the manager promised to pay her the next day, but the pay never came. She was the ONLY teacher hasn't get paid in her academy.
She is fed up with it. What can she do? If she quit her job, she might not be able to get the release letter. Does she have to go out of Korea and apply a new visa?
How can she get her pay if she quit her job and had to leave the country? |

She should stay home. If the director comes or calls (likely) explain that if she doesn't get paid, she doesn't work. If he comes with 1/2 the pay, work for 1/2 of the day.
This is assuming that she has enough money on hand to fly home. If she doesn't, she SOL and will have to work until he gives her enough to get out.
Labor board also might be an option. |

This is a red-flag sign that the employer is having money problems and likely to go out of business. It's time for your friend to make plans to get out. Your friend should be looking for a new employer pronto if she plans to stay in Korea, especially due to all the new changes for getting an E2 visa. I'd negotiate a LOR within the FIRST WEEK of my pay being late. That's most important if she plans to stay in Korea. Otherwise, she should not work and go straight to the Labour Board. Hope she saved up some money!!! Yes she MUST go OUT of Korea to get a new visa!!! Looks like after Dec. 1st she'll have to go home, get a medical, get a police background check and have an interview with a Korean official at a consulate. |

Some good advice and some bad. Your friend shouldn't stay home. That makes her the bad gal. Tell her to go to work and bring a book. When the students ask why she's sitting there reading and not teaching them, she can tell them the reason. No $$=no work.
The little minions will go home and tell mom and dad about the teacher with no money. I bet she'll get her money in full in a day or 2. |

Doing what Pak Yu Man suggests takes guts. It works- I've done it twice. I find it better to read a book in the manager's office, refusing to even go in the classroom. But either way the principle is the same, and mass panic will ensue. You will likely get threatened and yelled at. My advice is to remain calm no matter what, and explain that you will work if and only if you get paid. Anything else the boss says is wasted effort on his part.
Good luck and let us know how things go for your friend. |

Since it's only one person not being paid, I doubt this is about a lack of funds. It's probably about power.
I recommend your friend get a lesson prepared and go in to the manager's office, sit down and start reading. The teacher should let the manager know that the lesson is prepared and is ready to work as soon as he/she is paid in full. Then smile sweetly. Keep your temper. Don't say anything negative. |

Yes, head to the labor board. I had the same problem last year working at a hogwan. All the Korean teachers went on strike and got paid. The school didn't pay any of the teacher's that stayed to teach.
After two weeks I went to the labor board and got paid the same day the school lot of letter from the labor board. |

Contact labor from any land line telephone at 1350 and then file a claim for wages.
If you can't get an English speaker, wait a while and try back. |
