LPG vehicle emissions worry GNP lawmaker

A large amount of carcinogenic substances have been detected from cars running on liquefied petroleum gas, a lawmaker said yesterday.

Rep. Han Sun-kyo of the Grand National Party said at the parliamentary audit of the Environment Ministry that carcinogens such as formaldehyde and benzene have been discovered in the emissions of LPG vehicles, causing serious negative impacts on the environment.

Formaldehyde, which is known to damage long-term health is said to be associated with nasal cancer, nasopharyngeal cancer and leukemia. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency classifies it as a probable human carcinogen under unusually prolonged exposure.

Benzene also could develop harmful effects on bone marrow and cause a decrease in red blood cells, leading to anemia, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Han pointed out that there is an urgent need to enact regulations that restrict the discharge of such substances.

The current vehicle inspection standards are not appropriate for hazardous substances that can deteriorate the health of citizens and the environment, he said.

"When we take into consideration that the taxis operating throughout the nation amount to 2.15 million cars, this is a point that can't be missed," Han said. "We must conduct a comprehensive study on the noxiousness of the gas discharge and prepare a set of regulations for the vehicles that are deemed to be dangerous."

The government expects to invest 1.9 trillion won ($2.1 billion) until 2014 to install devices that can reduce emissions from gasoline vehicles.
