I'm at a public school and am considering asking my school for an advance on my November pay. Has anyone ever done this? Is it possible?

You just got paid 8 days ago and you already need more money? I don't think public schools give advances, and frankly, I'd be embarassed to ask, unless it was a huge emergency.

My public school actually offered to give me money to go to the dentist- I had sent almost all of my money home the previous day then broke my tooth- talk about timing. I had enough for food and my bills but nothing extra.

Now keep in mind I didn't ask for the money I just told them that I was going to have to wait for the next pay day to go to the dentist and get the tooth fixed.

ALWAYS keep enough money in country to buy a plane ticket home and/or fix a broken tooth, broken leg, etc. Come on, now...

Agreed. Or even if you are sending it all home, have access to it in Korea. I allow myself 700 000 won a month here. If I go over that I just withdraw from my own account back home. Which is naughty! Sad

Totally inappropriate. Even if the admin office could swing it (doubtful) simply asking would tarnish your reputation at the school. You can be sure everyone would be talking about it too.

Yeah, if you can avoid it at all, avoid it. The gossip at public schools is unbelievable. Everyone knows how much I make, how much my apartment costs, and probably my shoe size, weight, and shampoo too. It will make you look completley unprofessional, which in light of all the scandals lately, is something they are already thinking about all of us

Check out the Labor Standards Act:

Article 44 (Emergency Payment)

An employer shall advance partial payments of wages for the work offered even prior to payday, if a worker requests to do so in order to meet the expenses incurred from childbirth, disease, disaster or any other cases of emergency which are provided for in the Presidential Decree.

How's your relationship with your ct? After my first month, I spent a lot of money buying things for my apartment..and lots of shopping Very Happy I wanted to get a phone too and my ct was going to help me but I told him I didn't have any more money. He was more than willing to lend but I refused. I've borrowed his money on the first day here since I was so tired from the flight and forgot to exchange my money. I paid him back the next day though.
