Here is a lesson plan I've been using to teach my middle school boys about smoking. It's going very well and it's having an impact on them. If you can use this, please do. Boys in Korea hardly stand a chance of escaping from becoming smokers.

Some of the clips are funny, some are very serious. I explain to the kids that some of the serious ones are meant for adults, but since they are having to face such a serious issue, I thought they should see them.

Also, some of the more prudish K Teachers will think that some of the material is inappropriate. Argue strongly to the contrary. The kids need some emotional shock on this issue. All of our strongest memories have a fundamentally emotional character.

However, the kids actually deal well with the more mature clips. One of my coteachers who was reluctant to go with some of the clips at first has become quite enthusiastic about the lesson. He understands the importance.

You've got to be straight with the kids, tell 'em like it is. If we dance around and make believe that everyone is happy and everything is pretty all the time, no growth will take place. And these kids are going to grow up, become smokers, and suffer.

Modify it in anyway you see fit. Be creative. Use your position as a teacher to make a bit of a difference.

Anti-Smoking Lesson (3-4 day Plan)

Part I: Looking at Anti-Smoking Commercials (As Models)

--Go over vocabulary on hand out (below) as you approach the respective clip.

A. Question: Why do people smoke?

- Media (TV, Movies, Photo Images)

- Role Models: Adults

Children see, children do. (Or: Monkey see, monkey do.)

Do as I say, not as I do. (Take a drag. . .)

- Friends

B. What are some false ideas we have of smoking?

- Smoking makes you handsome.

- Smoking makes you strong, or powerful

- Smoking makes people think you are cool.

- Smoking shows you are sophisticated.

Second-hand smoke is still not impolite.

- Smoking makes you look smart.

Just as Stupid

C. Smoking is Dangerous:

Part II: Create commercial (Should begin by the end of the first class; second class is creating and perhaps performing the sketch. The alternative is to have them create a comic instead of a drama.)

(For this part, I have had the kids write a comic strip first. They get a handout with six frames. The kids are in groups of four. The K Teacher and I help the kids with the appropriate vocabulary, etc. Then, they make a poster as a second draft. Finally, the group decides on which idea will best represent the group. They work as a group to make one final caomic strip, then present it to the class. They will post them in their classroom.)

A. Give the students a handout which has:

i. A section to create four characters (groups of 4)

ii. Several lines on which to write their dialogues

iii. A line to write their slogan (ex: Monkey see, monkey do)

B. Have students practice their sketch and perform them.

Anti-Smoking Vocabulary

Dont kiss butt.
Dont be a butt-head.
Be a champion, dont smoke.

to the OP

This is a great idea for a lesson.
I teach in a public high school and it never even occured to me to do a lesson on anti-smoking, even though I can smell the smoke on half my boy students when they walk in the classroom.

Thanks for the idea!

No problem. Thanks for taking it on!

It's really more a satisfying lesson than "Joey has a baseball. See him throw?"
