Taiwan is a nice place, not quite as big as Korea (population or Geography), and the pay/benefits package isn't quite as good but it offers friendly people, good vacation time (4 weeks unpaid is standard), cheap/quick flights to southeast asia, and friendly people and a really solid expat scene in all the cites. There is also great nature and the weather is pretty close to tropical year round in the south, and not bd at all in the north. You can save in Taiwan, not heaps but a decent amount and live a good lifestyle.

Vietnam seems to be the hot spot. I've seen RMIT advertising very frequently in the last few months. That tells me there are more and more gigs opening up and drawing teachers away although there's a thread in the VN forum which speaks negatively about recent changes to the RMIT contract. Anyway, there's no shortage of ads (many 3-4 large chains) and it's probably better for saving money than most of Thailand. The question is: do you like to sweat?

I recommend Vietnam. It's the highest paying place in southeast Asia. Pay usually ranges between $14 and $20 an hour and the cost of living is pretty cheap. It's not too difficult to save $500-$1000 a month. There are plenty of job opportunities in Ho Chi Minh City for teachers.

Vietnam has one of the most interesting cultures to me in Asia. I love the architecture as well.

What I don't like is the people who constantly bother foreigners in the street expecting you to just toss money in their hands. The constant cyclo drivers as well. If that country becomes more economically equivalent to Taiwan, Korea, Japan, etc. where people on the streets aren't so desparate, I'd love to live there for awhile.

I think a lot of long term teachers in Vietnam learn to minimize that problem by not living in the tourist area (district 1) and by driving their own motorbike. There aren't many cyclo drivers outside of the tourist area.

How bout your own?

I know in the US, many teachers with a minimum GPA of 2.75 can find employment in school districts and study at the same time.

For a Master's degree, google MAT-type programs in or around your school district of choice.

If you click on the SIT banner on the bottom of this webpage, you'll get some information about such programs. I personally wouldn't know anything about them.

I taught in Thailand for a year after my year of hagwon hell here in Korea. I considered it my reward for surviving at a hagwon.

The pay sucks, but the hours are mostly low and the students were wonderful. The Thai administrators are illogical jackasses, but you get that everywhere. One of the best years of my life.

Thinking about there....

The money's low but is that low by Western standards?....
Can you live comfortably from what you make?
