CC,

It would be very interesting to see this information if it is available. Even if it was a couple of years old, then it would give us an idea of the breakdown of teachers in different categories.

We have visa types and total # issued per visa type, as of 2004.
http://wiki.galbijim.com/Visas

No nationality breakdown or distinction between Chinese E2, Japanese E2, or English E2, however.

The English link didn't work, but I had my co-teacher translate a bit. The figures are from 2005 so they over a year old.

Total Men Women
E-2 25.014 14,464 10,550
F-2 88,391 20,950 67,441
F-5 23,004 15,550 7,949

Total Foreigners 5,179,848
Men 2,911,459
Women 2,268,389

^ They seem to update it a year after the fact.

Total numbers of E2:

1994 4,277

1995 7,695

1996 13,787

1997 16,192

1998 12,077

1999 9,971

2000 11,849

2001 16,210

2002 20,682

2003 22,345

2004 23,134

2005 25,014

My guess is that these numbers are the total number of visas issued in a year. The actual number of teachers could be less.

As an example, in 2003 I finished a contract (E2) and left, came back on a tourist visa and then got a new job. They may have counted me three times, one for each visa issued. In 2004 and 2005 I was on an F2 but had an E2 to allow me to work (they don't do that now) and may have been added to the total for E2s those years.

Wow, thanks for posting that. It's interesting to see the dip in E2's in the very late 90's.

that guy made a vaild point about the numbers not being particularly accurate in determining the number of teachers because some teacher may have more then one job in a year or switch visa status.

That's true, but you can definitely use it as a "what % of jobs are being filled by who"

Was that during the "IMF" (as the locals call it)?

I've been searching for some documentation for these stats but haven't found anything useful yet.

It's a guess but I'd be surprised if they organize the data by individual rather than visa. Of course we can see a country breakdown so I could be wrong.

I'm using Lorum Ipsum as content filler until I can make the time to populate it with fresh content. It's on the list and there's a lot on the list before I can get around to overhauling that page.
