okay, so if you have only a BA then you can teach at a hogwon which from what i have gathered are generally "hit or miss". With an MA you can teach at a university? Are there many advantages over teaching at a uni, than a hogwon?

Also, an MA in what? It is my understanding that you need a BA in anything in order to get a job at a hogwon...does the same rule apply with for getting your masters in say, the same field as your undergraduate work? Or are Universities looking for a masters in Linguistics or ESL ?

I've heard that uni can be hit or miss too.

This is Korea, everyone gets screwed at some point.

Korea - B.A.

Japan - Ph.D or M.A. with 2 - 5 publications (2 or 3 refereed)
and your Ph.D or M.A. should be related (Linguistics, English,
Education, TESOL).

Taiwan - By law you must have an M.A. to teach in a National or Private
university in Taiwan. (publications not really required). Ph.D is
listed as requirement for some top National schools.
Expereince not necessary. M.A. does not have to be in a
related field.

I think posco nailed it. Actually my school has moved away from advertising and is asking teachers to recommend people. In the past recommendees ahve proven to be the best quality teachers
