|

I've got to know a number of foreign students here, mostly from southeast Asia and some of the stories I'm hearing from them are beginning to disturb me. I know how libel laws are here, so I won't name the institution. Suffice to say I heard this first hand.
The student in question is on a scholarship and was offered a job doing domestic duties by someone in the faculty. The scumbag in question has her working almost 40 hours a week for around 200 bucks a month. What's more, he has not paid her yet and is beginning to hint that her 'free' room and board (which is covered by the scholarship) is an odd arrangement. Thus I get the feeling he is exploiting her by pressuring her to think she has to work for him to cover this.
I've heard so many more stories of exploitation, intellectual theft and bullying that I wouldn't hesitate to tell prospective students here to find another country in which to do their degree. A number have voted with their feet of late, thankfully, and gone to Europe, where they say they not only get a better standard of education, but don't get treated like coolies either. Has anyone else heard of this kind of thing going on here? |
