There was a round up of "silly news" in the paper the other day. One of the items was this:

Quote:
A town in South Korea which spent some 140 million dollars to build its own airport was then forced to admit that no airlines actually wanted to fly there.

Any idea what town and airport this is?

I saw an ad for a snazzy international airport in Cheongju. The picture showed this brilliant building, sitting on the edge of a hideously empty field. Not sure if that's the one.

Pretty sure that would be Yangyang International Airport in Gangwondo.

On completion a couple years ago it claimed to be the 3rd largest airport in Korea, capable of handling the largest planes & 2 million passengers a year.

Currently it handles 3 small Asiana flights a week to & from Busan. Thats it.

It effectively killed air service for residents of Gangneung & Sokcho. Gangneung already had a serviceable airport with decent service to Seoul & Busan, & Sokcho had daily flights to Gimpo (in good weather) but both were shut down when Yangyang opened.

The airport is in Uljin, in Gyeongbuk.

Good use of the word "boondoggle".

I flew into Yangyang this year in what was the only flight in that day....it was bizarre.

Here you have this brand new airport and on our flight there would have been lucky to have been 30 people on the only flight all day....you could see everybody was just waiting for us to get out as they can shut up shop and go home.

If you are a permanent worker there must be one of the easiest jobs in the world.
