I hear as of December 2007 there will be no more visa runs to Japan. Instead all visas will have to obtained from the Korean consulate in your home country. In addition, I was told that if you wish to extend your visa, it will have to be done in your home country as well. Meaning, you will have to fly back home then back to Korea if you want to continue working for your present employer in Korea.

In addition, a criminal record check with finger prints will need to be submitted along with standard material in order to obtain an E2 visa.

I think you need new ears.

I wish it were true. It would be nice for an exployer to have to send me home instead of a quick trip to Japan for a new visa. To be accurate, work visas are actually pre-approved by the local immigration office (who issues the confirmation of visa issuance number) and not by the consular office abroad so requiring you to get your visa in your home country, as compared to Japan (or another country) serves no purpose.

There is no such thing as a visa extension so that part can't be accurate either.

You can extend your visa. If you are still with the same employer you just pop on down to immi and get an extension. Smile

It should be said that, according to a book I read, Korea is the LAST Asian country that requires people to leave the country in order to get a new visa. The LAST.

You cannot extend an E2 visa. Extension to the period of sojourn is what you get and is marked on your ARC.

Your VISA does NOT change and is NOT extended.

Your visa expired 90 days after it was issued unless you are American and have a multi-entry visa.

In their specific case the visa is not extended (its expiry date remains the same) and if they want a re-entry after the one year period they must apply for a re-entry permit.

Some may say this is just semantics but semantics can and will get your status cancelled if not done correctly.

Not true. I was in Phuket, Thailand and had to go to Burma to renew my visa.

^ but with a bit of magic you can turn a tourist visa into a non-immb or even a VOA into a non-immB with a little work

I think the OP is wrong but I did read yesterday that as of December all foreign visitors to Japan will have to give fingerprints and will be photographed.

I wish Immi had told me this back in August of '06. I wanted to stay on with my school for a few more months and so my boss took my passport and such to the local Immi office. They stamped my passport and told my boss they extended my visa. As it turns out, they had only extended my period of sojourn but I didn't find this out until I tried to re-enter the country after a holiday in Japan over Chuseok. Being detained and interrogated in the Busan ferry terminal was one of the lowlights of my first stay here.

This is true but it will be done by JAPANESE immigration. It has nothing to do with Korea.

1) That is Japanese Immigration, and as nothing to do with getting a Korean visa
2) the US has already been doing this for years
