The vacuum cleaners here aren't that large. My apt sure would be dirty if I didn't have one.

I used to take a damp towel and rub it across the floor. That was in the days before vacuums (and a maid) were common.

No, I have never been supplied with one.

The basics I usually see teachers get (if they get anything at all) include a bed or folding couch/bed combo, maybe an old TV, a fridge, a washing machine, sometimes a few kitchen utensils, and that's about it. You should also ask about an air conditioner, but some schools don't provide that.

Judging by some of the stories I've heard, you'll be lucky to get a bed.

You should have the items that are to be included w/ your apt written into your contract. A vacuum cleaner was in the list of furnishings in my contract but there wasn't one in my apt so I asked for one and was given a quite nice one....very powerful. My wife vacuums and wet mops the apt every day...she makes good use of the machine.

My limited experience says their supply rate is 50/50, my first apartment didnt have one, but the second does.

I dont use it. I also prefer the quietness of the wet towel. I have one I use to wipe the bathroom floor (I stand and shuffle around) and then on the odd occasion take it out and do the same on the rest of the apartment. After that I throw it into the washing machine.

However, despite my persistant protests, my gf cleans the floor every time she visits.

I was given one but I prefer a broom and a dustpan.

I got a new vacuum (along with a new washing machine, fridge, tv, furniture, etc) with my apartment. I'm a public school teacher though, so YMMV.
