My co-worker is doing a Visa renewal this December. Of course, given the recent developments he is not sure what is going on and neither is our boss. The current plan is to renew his Visa locally, then fly to Canada to visit his family in February (as per the agreement) then come back. If everything I've been hearing lately is true, then he might have to go back to Canada in December instead and not come back for quite some time... severely screwing up our hagwon.

Question #1: Police check. Can you do this at the local RCMP detachment back home? If I remember this only takes 2-3 days. No big deal. Can you do it long distance/have your parents do it in case you need to have it before you renew your Visa?

How recent does it have to be?

Question #2: Medical checks. How many do you need, and where do you have to get them?

Question #3: Consulate interview. How the heck will this work? Is there a waiting period? For those of us who don't live near a consulate, will it be as simple as having a stop over on the way to Korea, having it done, then hopping back on the plane to continue the flight?

Thanks. I want to know if this is all possible within a one-to-two week window as that is the maximum duration he can stay at home.

I'm also baffled by this whole procedure and sincerely hoping they change their minds before my contract runs up in May and I sign another.

This I can help you with. Police Checks. Even in Canada an RCMP police check takes 2-4 months. You must get fingerprints and submit them by mail. You can go to local regional or provincial police but those criminal checks are not as thorough or accepted as the RCMP or FBI (for the Yanks) ones.

Good god man, how can they expect us to do this?

If he actually has to go through with this than our hagwon will be understaffed (just me) for 2-4 months. That is ridiculous. Not just my hagwon either, but *every* hagwon. Do they have any... god damn... !#%!$@

Okay, so, is it possible that the provincial police checks will suffice?

Probably, I said in another thread that people will just use provincial checks until some douchebag commits a crime and the Koreans figure out all police checks are not the same. Then the shiite will hit the fan.

But for now, as far as I can tell, regional or provincial checks will pass. But I make no promises about that.

We should stop all of these threads that speculate on what immigration will require from us. They have not said yet, and nobody knows what will happen. (foremost immigration themselves.)

It sucks because lives and holiday plans lie in the balance, but thats Korea for you.

2) VISA will not be renewable in Korea. At the completion of one year, if the teacher decides to stay at their current school, they must return to their home country and obtain their VISA there. ...

I have already handed over what Chachee99 wrote - to the relevant authorites - to have it checked...

at the moment we are still waiting for a response - but so far have been told THIS WILL NEVER BE IMPLEMENTED because it will cause an outroar from UNI's, Hagwons, Private Institutes etc - who seem to have more power here than government officials...

so just wait 1~2 weeks - and we will find out exactly what is the outcome and the NEW laws and I will publish it here...
